Presbyterian is hiring a Oral Maxillofacial Surgical Assistant for the Oral Maxillofacial clinic on Pan American. The Oral Surgical Assistant provides primary support to the provider by preparing the patient for the visit. Responsible for effectively communicating with the oral and maxillofacial surgery team while assisting during all phases of the clinical sessions. Accurately prepares each room with equipment and supplies and assists with oral surgical procedures including taking vital signs, digital images and x-rays and reviewing pre/post-operative instruction to patients.
*Provides support for clerical functions to include scheduling, referrals, and prior authorizations
*Performs activities to maintain a clean, stocked, safe, and well-organized patient care environment

Experience: 
* Preferred Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical Assistant (COMSA) by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) or Current Certification as a Dental Assistant (CDA).
*Successfully obtain a DAANCE Certification of completion of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon's Office Anesthesia Assistants Program of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons within the first 12 months of employment.
* One year of experience as oral surgery assistant.
Professional Requirements:
*Maintains current certifications in required emergency response trainings.
*Completes all Organizational, Department of Nursing and Department-Specific competency training/requirements within specified timeframe.
Current Radiology and BLS certifications (required)

  Education:
High School Diploma or GED
Teamwork:
Participates on care team to meet patient care and clinic needs, working cooperatively with others to accomplish required work in a timely and efficient manner.
Visit Navigation:
Prepares patient for the visit, collecting appropriate and accurate data, and providing all aspects of primary support to the provider.
Equipment and Procedures:
Assists Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical staff with procedures and patients under local, nitrous oxide, deep sedation and general anesthesia; under direct supervision of surgeon, performs extra- and intra-oral procedures (i.e. suture removal, dressing changes, irrigations, changing elastics); assists with airway maintenance during procedures, to include routine head tilt, chin lift or jaw thrust; places monitors, records data, and reports to surgeon; and documents anesthesia record. Accurately takes impressions, bite registrations and fabricates models for pre-operative Orthognathic and trauma patients. Exposes and develops x-rays; ensures that x-rays are of adequate diagnostic quality, duplicate x-rays as needed.
Message Management / Test Result Notification:
Responses to patient calls related to test results, medication refills, and referral requests under the direction of the provider. Trained in various programs to include but not limited to scheduling, prior authorizations, and referral management.
Indirect Care Activities:
*Ensures all rooms are properly stocked with instruments, forms etc.; turnovers rooms in an efficient and diligent manager (i.e. correctly decontaminates rooms) after each procedure; and cleans, sterilizes and sets up each operating room at start of clinic session.
Greets patients appropriately, verifies patient identification, seats patiently punctually and with a smile, modifies head rests to accommodate each patient, verifies patient info before surgeon enters room (i.e. falls/smoking/pain scale) Using established written guidelines provides pre- and post-operative information to patients being admitted to Surgical Day Care Unit. (i.e. post-extraction instruction, care of wire jaw, nutritional guidelines for fracture and orthognathic patients). Performs selected clerical tasks as needed (i.e. patient check-in, as required) and all other tasks (i.e. supply inventory and ordering) as assigned by the physicians
*Manages patients calls
*Schedules patient appointments according to guidelines as defined by standard work.
*Monitor providers schedules to identify no shows for rescheduling. Places reminder calls to patients.
*Manages prior authorization for durable medical equipment, diagnostics, and specialties.
*Manages referrals for diagnostic testing or specialist.
*Manages and maintains tracking of Advanced Directives, FMLA, and other patient forms.

Uses AIDET principles as well as good listening, oral and interpersonal communication skills to create a supportive, therapeutic environment, and provides responsive, compassionate care in meeting patient, significant other, and family requests and needs.

Communicates patient data to provider, keeping him/her informed of issues and concerns regarding patients or the environment.
