Join the HJF Team!  HJF is seeking an Optometrist to provide scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the Warfighter Refractive Eye and Surgery Program and Research Center (WRESP). The Optometrist is responsible for pre-surgical evaluation, work up and post-surgical co-management of refractive surgery patients enrolled in WRESP-RC surgery programs within established institutional policies and procedures, ensuring that all necessary steps are followed for safety and regulatory compliance and for assuring accuracy of complex clinical documentation on patients' records, maintaining confidentiality.
The primary mission of the WRESP-RC is to provide refractive surgery to our nation's warfighters so that they might perform their duties on the battlefield without the need for spectacle correction. One of the unique features of the WRESP is that it is not necessarily a "medical" program but a "medical readiness" program. The secondary mission is to critically investigate military aspects of refractive surgery in order to improve the visual function of America's warfighters on the modern battlefield.

WRESP-RC serves as a research center for refractive surgery in the U.S. Army and DOD. Studies focus on a comprehensive evaluation of safety, efficacy, and visual performance after laser refractive surgery with particular regard to aspects of military importance.

HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.  
Perform refractive surgery co-management including screening and preoperative examination, routine postoperative management, and management of postoperative complications. Assist with planning and modification of research procedures and tests. Identify patients for specific study or other WRESP-RC programs. Complete, collect and submit case report forms for WRESP- RC protocols. Oversee data collection, interprets, synthesizes, and analyzes data. Review scientific reports, assists in checking the accuracy of data and data entry. Prepare scientific reports and manuscripts in collaboration with other study team members. Meet and maintains liaison with external study groups. Report on status of research activities. Conduct Internet and library searches, summarizes research studies. Attend meetings in reference to research. Assist in development of technical staff. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for the role. Education and Experience   Doctor of Optometry Degree (O.D.) from an accredited college approved by the Council of
Optometric Education of the American Optometric Association. Minimum of 0-2 years experience required. Licenses and Certifications Current, valid, active, unrestricted license to practice as an optometrist in any U.S. jurisdiction.
Basic Life Support Certification.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Professional knowledge of refractive surgery to include familiarity with surgical procedures, patient selection, and co-management of refractive surgery patients. Knowledge of medical science and clinical research. Ability to make effective presentations and publish. Ability to communicate effectively. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills. Responsible for research and/or development in collaboration with other scientific and technical staff. Experience in clinical research a plus. US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret Clearance. Work Environment This position will take place primarily in a clinic setting. Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required. Employment with HJF is contingent upon successful completion of a background check, which may include, but is not limited to, contacting your professional references, verification of previous employment, education and credentials, a criminal background check, and a department of motor vehicle (DMV) check if applicable. Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents, in lieu of stated minimums, require the prior approval of the Chief Human Resources Officer.
