Position Summary: Assist in the care of patients by performing ultrasounds and a variety of preliminary tests according to the physician orders and nature of the patient visit. Run intraocular lens calculations accurately and maintain a general knowledge of different types of IOLs.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities: Assist physician with patients Escort patients to and from exam areas, may be required to assist patients with walking, pushing wheelchairs, lifting and transferring Demonstrate a clear understanding of patient medical records and documentation protocol Run calculations for cataract surgery lens orders by entering data into calculation software Perform all testing needed to order appropriate lenses for cataract surgery Complete and accurately document testing Maintain relationships with representatives from the lens companies to stay current on lens information; maintain record of points of contact at hospitals and surgery centers Provide patient education on testing performed and general questions on cataract surgery Accurately perform and record applanation tonometry Instill eye drops Responsible for ordering cataract surgery lenses to be sent to hospitals and/or surgery centers in a timely manner Accurately record and analyze post-operative outcome data Enter new lens information into the testing equipment Maintain and ensure order of testing rooms, waiting rooms and equipment in the IOL area. Provide training on IOL equipment to other staff members as needed Perform testing for cataract surgery measurements on patients under general anesthesia as needed The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant - IOL works closely with physicians, patients, and other medical floor staff. The COA - IOL reports directly to the ASC Clinical Director Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong communication skills; verbal and written Ability to develop good working relationships with physicians and staff Strong aptitude with computer software and typing skills Ability to work in a fast-paced medical facility while adhering to HIPAA compliance regulations Demonstrates knowledge of proper, safe, efficient usage of office equipment, computers, and software; working knowledge of Microsoft Office High School Graduate Work Relationship and Scope: Understanding of medical terminology and basic anatomy of the eye Knowledge of examination equipment and instrumentation, operation and maintenance Ability to convey a positive attitude and be able work well independently Previous experience in a medical office desirable Work Conditions: This job description describes the general nature and level of work performed by the employee assigned to this position. Acknowledgement: Eye Clinic of Wisconsin has eight locations; while staff will be assigned to a "home" location, travel to satellites is an infrequent requirement of the position. Hours of work will be dependent on the needs of the Clinic. Requires the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Occasional lifting (30 pounds), bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and climbing stairs is required.
