Job Duties The Virginia Department of Transportation is currently seeking an Operator (Structure and Bridge) to repair, maintain and replace bridges and structures in accordance with established safety standards, VDOT specifications and procedures, and equipment operation standards.
The Operator (Structure and Bridge) participates as a working member of the crew to complete projects and accomplish objectives. Performs manual labor and other tasks as needed to assist the team in accomplishing construction, repair and maintenance of timber, steel and concrete bridge elements and other structures.
Additional core responsibilities include:
Environmental Protection - Apply appropriate in-stream and environmental protection measures during all structural maintenance and construction activities.
Emergency Operations - Place temporary bridges and remove damaged structures. Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other types of emergency operations. Clear roadways of snow, ice and debris, and clean up after accidents. Provide traffic control.
Job Safety - Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Identify workplace safety hazards and make suggestions for improvement. Wear personal protection equipment. Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and procedures (OSHA and VOSHA, etc.). Use equipment properly and safely. Apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc. Maintain clean, orderly, and safe work environment. Follow VDOT safety regulations and practices.
Equipment Operation - Operate light and medium-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction related work tasks.
Construction Operations - Perform a combination of skilled tasks to include carpentry, welding and concrete finishing. Remove and install structural components to erect, replace or demolish structures.
Preventative Maintenance - Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools. Transport personnel, equipment and materials to and from various work sites. Ensure all equipment is properly and safely maintained. Complete pre-trip inspections for any vehicle or equipment operated. Minimum Qualifications • Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials and safety practices.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Skill in the operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment, as well as in the use of hand and power tools.
• Safety shoes required.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts.
• Skill in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
• Ability to work at heights, over and, or in water, in heavy traffic and under other adverse conditions. Additional Considerations • Experience in carpentry, building forms and false works, and concrete placement and finishing.
• Experience in bridge maintenance or construction.
• Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements.
• Valid Certified Crane Operator with appropriate endorsements

Fingerprint-based criminal history background check, DMV driving record check, pre-employment physical, drug screen, references, and work history will be required prior to employment. Valid CDL and driver's license and safety shoes required.
All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class B to a Class A, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.

Position is designated as essential and, as such, will be required to work outside normal hours, weekends, and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations. Travel may be required.
VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
