As a Maintenance Operator , you will use our foundational drivers to play a crucial role in shaping the highways that connect communities and drive progress across the Commonwealth of Virginia.
If you are interested in a career supporting VDOT's mission and keeping the roads around Culpeper County in top shape, then join our West Culpeper area headquarters team. Multiple positions are available at the West Culpeper area headquarters. We will begin screening applicants on May 13, 2024, and hold interviews and then screen every two weeks thereafter.
As a maintenance operator , you will:
*Work as part of a team clearing drainage, removing debris, cutting brush, and roadway maintenance. Tasks include installing culvert pipes, grading gravel roads, hauling gravel and debris, rolling patching, and other manual labor duties needed to maintain Virginia's roads.
*Operate equipment such as, but not limited to, dump trucks, backhoes, graders, tar kettles, rollers, loaders, mowing tractors, etc. For each piece of equipment operated, you will complete a pre-trip/post-trip inspection and maintain equipment for readiness.
*Use hand and power tools and perform manual labor tasks.
*Respond to emergencies blocking roads, such as traffic accidents and debris, to provide traffic control and perform activities to reopen the road. During severe weather, you will prepare for, and operate equipment to remove snow and ice, along with working in other types of hazardous weather affecting road conditions. Emergency response will require work outside of normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications Experience in roadway maintenance or construction or knowledge of materials, methods, and procedures used in roadway maintenance or construction.
Experience in operating equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, graders, backhoes, etc.
Able to read and follow oral and written instructions
Able to perform heavy manual labor, including frequent lifting up to 50 pounds
Skilled in using hand and power tools
Valid driver's license required at hire. A Commercial Driver's License and DOT medical card are required within 11 months of employment and maintained thereafter. Additional Considerations Current CDL (Class A or B) with appropriate endorsements
Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs

Position requires unrestricted mobility, working in all types of weather, and terrain, and standing for long periods. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Requires approved safety shoes, which is a reimbursable expense.
All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles before receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
Fingerprint-based background checks, references, work history, and DMV records will be verified before employment.
Selected applicants holding a valid CDL must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen, otherwise, applicants will be required to complete a pre-employment physical.

VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
