Program Summary:
Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) is a program of the non-profit service organization, Conservation Legacy, built on the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). SCC provides youth and young adults opportunities to complete conservation projects on public lands. While serving with SCC, members receive job skills, conflict resolution, leadership, teamwork, and environmental stewardship training. Our programs have a step ladder approach to provide a progression of skill development based on a member's needs. Members receive a weekly living allowance, training, and an AmeriCorps Education Award (for qualifying individuals).
Position Summary:The Field Supervisor's primary roles are to provide field, social-emotional, and logistical support to our field staff and seasonal ecological monitoring and watershed crews by offering technical assistance and morale support and ensuring program integrity through policy enforcement and positive mentoring. The Field Supervisor will assist with program logistics and planning and facilitating crew lead and member training. Besides some planning, logistics, and administrative duties, the position is predominately field-based.
Essential Responsibilities and Functions:
Training:
Help develop and implement crew leader and member training for Ecological Monitoring and SCC Durango-based programming throughout spring, including technical work, protocols, and leadership and facilitation skills. Be a role model and mentor throughout training and field season, especially for Crew Leaders. Primarily, the crews that this position supports will be conducting the Assessment, Inventory, & Monitoring (AIM) protocol upon desert and rangeland ecosystems. The crews are based out of remote locations in Bureau of Land Management (BLM) offices across Colorado and New Mexico. The soil and botanical data they collect help inform the state and trend of vegetative resources throughout BLM lands, and subsequently inform land management decisions. SCC and the BLM will provide all necessary technical training on the survey protocols to the Field Supervisor.
Field Support:
Conduct regular overnight visits to crews, project partners, and work sites throughout New Mexico and southwest Colorado. The area we serve spans a vast acreage on public lands between the two states with >16 crews based out of >11 BLM offices, and this position will travel to as many of these crews as possible throughout their term. Once training and field season commences, work weeks are usually four 10-hour days spent traveling to a crew, supporting operations, traveling back, debriefing/follow-up, and addressing administrative tasks. 'Eight on, six off' work weeks are also possible. Occasionally, workdays/weeks are spent locally.
Typically, week to week, the Field Supervisor visits a different crew in a different BLM Office, whom they may or may not have already met, yet whom they need to support, converse with, and advise.
Communicate and debrief with crew leaders and corps members during field visits. Liaise between field and office personnel and provide remote follow-up check-ins with crews after field visits. Manage on-the-ground project quality and quantity by providing technical assistance as needed. Support and advise project management in front country and remote working locations. Enforce all SCC and agency policies and procedures. Provide encouragement, guidelines, and supervision to crew leaders throughout their tenure. May fill in for vacant crew leader positions as necessary. May assist with office staff's crew hiring or administration tasks as necessary throughout the spans of the terms of crews, especially before the main start of the field season in April.
Programming:
Assist with planning, scheduling, and implementing crew projects. Assist with the development and coordination of risk management policies. Facilitate corps member development in the field.
Tools, Equipment, Gear:
Plan and help logistics staff with project logistics. Assist the Logistics Coordinator in maintaining a clean and efficient base of operations. Work within an established program budget regarding necessary purchases. Help maintain vehicles and trailers. Develop and implement strategies to improve vehicle and tool usage safety and care.
Risk Management and Emergencies:
The Field Supervisor will be one of the first staff responders for crew emergencies and support and, therefore, must be readily available for trips into the field and comfortable with an ever-shifting work schedule. May help prepare any forms and instruments for emergency planning and use. Will audit programs for risk management gaps and provide relevant feedback to staff.
General Administration and Partnerships:
Help maintain accurate reporting of all necessary information and complete program reports, project, program, and crew leader evaluations throughout the season. Help develop and maintain relationships with community and project partners.
Other Duties
Successfully engages, leads, and supports an inclusive work environment for those of underrepresented populations within the organization and the communities we serve. Leads and participates in organizational-wide teams, projects, and initiatives that support the work of the Strategic Plans' goals. Reports any potential harassment or grievances within the organization as identified in the Personnel Policy Manual.
