Job Summary: We are looking for a positive, enthusiastic, and proactive educator, with a passion for working with middle school students (grades 6 – 8). Candidates should have a strong background planning, organizing and implementing a developmentally appropriate and sequential middle school physical education program that promotes health and wellness, sportsmanship and a lifelong love of physical activity. This position requires collaborative work with faculty within the Physical Education Department. We seek candidates who possess the following education, experience, capabilities and qualities:
Essential Functions: Plan, prepare and deliver creative and effective instructional and interactive lesson plans that teach co-ed sports, team building, skill development and cooperative games that lead to active learning experiences and enhances a student's knowledge of physical education. Identify and select different instructional resources and methods to motivate students toward physical fitness achievement in accordance with each student's varying needs. Utilize technology to facilitate instruction and enhance learning. Participate in departmental level, divisional and whole school meetings and professional development activities. Advise students and hold conferences with students and parents as needed. Provide time to mentor and assist students who may need extra help. Post grades in a timely manner. Communicate with parents regarding a student's progress in physical education. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Education/Background: Possess a Bachelor's degree in Education or related field. Master's degree preferred. Accomplished teacher of Physical Education with student-centered pedagogy. Holds a current teaching certification in the state of Virginia, or a reciprocal state, with an endorsement in Physical Education. Technology proficiency is essential including use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and the use of SmartBoards and digital projectors preferably in an Apple environment. Proficiency with G. Suite for Education and Blackbaud preferred, but not required. Effective in integrating technology into the classroom to enhance learning. 5 or more years teaching experience is preferred. Required Skills: Familiarity with 21st Century teaching methodologies and possesses a student centered outlook. Understanding of child development and experience working with a range of needs and abilities. Understanding of the needs of students in a challenging academic independent school environment. Ability to collaborate effectively with other physical education teachers and ensure cohesion of the program across divisions. Understands the mission of the school and the need to focus on the education of the whole child. Takes initiative and is self-motivated. Represents the school positively in the community. Excellent organizational skills and communication skills, both written and oral. Understands the critical nature of building positive working relationships with students, parents and colleagues. Work collaboratively not only with teachers within the department but also school-wide.
