The candidate hired will be required to pass a drug screening, background check, and may be required to pass a job-related physical evaluation.


Hours of Work: 4/10's. 6am-4:30pm. Mon-Thurs


NOTE: This position is a flex position. Candidates will be hired in at a level I, with a starting salary of $33.14 hourly. After a 6–24-month period, the selected candidate will be evaluated to determine if they meet the criteria to flex to a level II, with a starting salary of $35.08 hourly.


The Ideal Candidate will have experience in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of industrial equipment and machinery ranging from fractional to 4,000 hp motors; booster pumps; check valves and control valves, which include mechanical, electromechanical and hydro mechanical systems; and related equipment, machinery and appurtenances used in the treatment, production and transmission of potable water.


Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:


A valid Class C driver's license. Ability to obtain a Class A CDL if needed.
Nevada State Health Division Water Distribution Operator I Certificate or obtainable within 6 months of hire date. (Grade II is desirable.) Nevada State Health Division Water Distribution Operator II Certificate or obtainable within 12 months of achieving the Grade 1. A Welding certification are greatly desired. GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of skilled, journey-level duties in the design, construction, installation, modification, fabrication, maintenance, repair and servicing of sophisticated and complex mechanical systems and machinery used in the treatment, storage, production and transmission of a potable water supply; performs basic maintenance and repairs to electrical systems and electronic control systems; performs skilled machine shop duties; and performs related duties as assigned.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Principles, methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment and machinery common to a large water works system; machine shop procedures and practices; safety practices, safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work; shop mathematics; use and operation of oxyacetylene and electric arc welding equipment and materials; Safe Drinking Water Act, AWWA and relevant state and federal regulations; micro-computer applications related to the work; codes, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the work.
Ability to:
Diagnose and repair a wide variety of mechanical equipment, systems and machinery, such as valves, motors, pumps and other equipment common to the water works field; use precision and diagnostic instruments to measure required tolerances of mechanical parts; operate a pump installing rig; arc weld and oxygen-acetylene cut; identify and implement effective courses of action to complete assigned work; read and interpret plans, specifications and manuals; exercise independent judgment and initiative within established guidelines; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work; coordinate work assignments with other sections, divisions or departments; operate SCBA, scrubber and chlorine leak detector.
Training and Experience:
The following are typical ways of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above:
Mechanical Systems Technician I – Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; and two years of journey-level experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of pumping equipment, including valves, pumps and motors; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Mechanical Systems Technician II – A Mechanical Systems Technician I may be considered for advancement to Mechanical Systems Technician II after demonstrating proficiency to perform the full range of duties of the latter class. Proficiency criteria and the process for demonstrating performance at the levels established in the criteria are established jointly by hiring authorities and the Director, Human Resources and are described in a separate document.
Typically, a Mechanical Systems Technician I is expected to be capable of meeting the proficiency criteria within a 6-24 month period, depending on an individual's prior experience and progression in performing the full range of Mechanical System Technician II duties as described in the established performance criteria.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
A valid Class B Nevada driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's Vehicle Insurance Policy.
Technician I - Operations:
State of Nevada Division of Environmental Protection Distribution Operator's Grade I within 12 months of hire;
Technician II - Operations:
State of Nevada Division of Environmental Protection Distribution Operator's Grade II within 24 months of hire
Tech I - Treatment:
Nevada State Health Division Treatment Operator I certification within 12 months of hire.
Tech II - Treatment
Nevada State Health Division Treatment Operator I certification within 24 months of hire.
Chlorine Response Team Members must meet the requirements to serve on the team.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear; and walk or sit. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and smell.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and frequently over 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Some incumbents may be required to pass and maintain a breathing test at 80 percent or higher, lift in a two-person lift a 250-pound chlorine cylinder into an upright position; perform shutoffs and other repairs while wearing SCBA and other protective clothing and equipment.
Some employees in this class may be required to occasionally wear respirators. In accordance with OSHA regulations, employees are prohibited from having facial or head hair that impairs the effectiveness of respirator equipment.
