Introduction The Mechanic position provides performance of semi-skilled, skilled, and administrative work in maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment of the Public Works Department and various other Village departments. The work includes preventative maintenance, servicing, and repair of a wide variety of motor vehicles, construction equipment, and small engine equipment. Work also involves performing routine maintenance of building mechanical systems including HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. On occasion, the position is also required to perform the same tasks assigned to a Public Works Crewperson, including snow plowing.
Position Summary Tests, diagnoses, services and repairs vehicles and mechanical equipment including but not limited to large dump trucks, back hoes, skid loaders, loaders, pickup trucks, fire trucks, ambulances, police squads, mowers, tractors, portable and stationary generators, plows, wings, sanders, string trimmers, chain saws, etc. Determines the most cost-effective means of maintenance, repair, or replacement and reports to Supervisor. Performs preventive maintenance for all vehicles and mechanical equipment following a prescribed maintenance schedule. Repairs tires, brakes, engines, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies, suspension, air conditioning and related systems. Performs light body repair, touch up and related work. Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed. Purchases equipment, parts, and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance within prescribed guidelines. Coordinates parts inventory under the direction of Supervisor. Follows shop procedures and budget data for the maintenance and repair of vehicles and mechanical systems set by the Supervisor. Assists in the preparation of bid specifications for vehicles and mechanical equipment. Designs and modifies Public Works equipment with the guidance of Supervisor. Coordinates DOT pre trip/post trip vehicle inspections, including follow up repairs, documentation and related tasks under supervision. Maintains records, prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records for vehicles and other related equipment. Assists in the preparation of budgets. Operates a wide variety of diagnostic tools, all basic hand tools, electrically powered tools, pneumatic tools, lifts and related equipment in a safe manner. Performs cutting, welding and fabrication to snow removal equipment, turf maintenance equipment and all other Village owned facilities and equipment. Salary Information Starting pay range is $28.72/hour to $36.39/hour (depending on qualifications) with an excellent benefit package, including health insurance, participation in Wisconsin Retirement System, ample paid time off and much more.
Job Details Hours are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday with rotating on-call duties. Candidate must be available for overtime work when required, including periodic night and weekend work, and must be able to respond to emergency call outs within 30 minutes in all weather conditions.
Qualifications The qualified candidate will possess the following education and experience:
High school diploma or GED equivalency; Completion of a full-time training program in automotive or diesel mechanics; 3 to 5 years of related experience in maintenance and repair of cars, trucks, construction equipment, and small engine; or, Any combination of education and experience which in the sole discretion of the Village would demonstrate the Employee's ability to meet the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position. Candidate must possess or be able to obtain a valid Wisconsin drivers' license with applicable Commercial Driver's License (CDL) endorsements.
