Title: Math/Science Teacher (7th-8th Grade)
Salary Range: $61,897 K-$110,641 K

Start Date: Aug 26, 2024

Schedule: This role is a 10-month position, and is in the Professional Employees' Federation (PEF), the union for faculty members at Bank Street College. The hours for this position are 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Mondays through Fridays, and until 5:00 PM on Wednesdays for a weekly afternoon faculty meeting. This role also includes occasional overnight work (~1 multi-night trip per year) for class field trips and occasional event support (~3 per year) that may happen outside of typical work hours.

About the Position
The Math/Science teacher is responsible for teaching math and science and also serves as a homeroom teacher responsible for building community and attending to the social/emotional development of students. This role will primarily teach 7th and/or 8th grade classes, and may have some teaching responsibilities for other grades or parts of Children's Programs. We seek an innovative educator with a Masters Degree and at least three or more years of experience teaching upper elementary and/or early middle school-aged students. Experience with implementing student-centered math and/or science curriculum and working in a collaborative environment is desired.
Focus of 7th & 8th Grade Curriculum:
Group work and discovery-based learning and problem solving are key components of our curricula
- The 7th and 8th grade math curriculum is a two year algebra sequence. In 7th grade the focus is on expressions, equations, exponents, linear relationships with slope and graphing, and introductory 3D geometry. The 8th grade builds upon the 7th grade study and completes the algebra sequence.
- The 7th grade science curriculum is life science, which includes a genetics study, a microscope study, evolution, and a study of human growth and development.
- The 8th grade science course is Introductory Physical Science (IPS), an intro chemistry course about the properties of matter.

Classroom Responsibilities:
- Teach a math/science curriculum to students that responds to their developmental capacities and needs
- Serve as co-advisor and homeroom teacher and organize and maintain a positive classroom community
- Differentiate instruction to support group and individual learning
- Document lesson plans and develop a comprehensive curriculum with guidance from supervisor and in collaboration with other members of the math/science team
- Collaborate with teachers and specialists to support curriculum and children's development
- Communicate with individual families as needed
- Write student reports and present at curriculum events
- Communicate regularly with families and others who support learning and growth of students
- Provide extra help to students as necessary during activities periods and morning math
- Support and attend weekly assemblies
- Maintain and share the math/science rooms in collaboration with the math/science team

Additional Responsibilities
- Contribute to internal coverage within the Math/Science team and across the school
- Fulfill weekly community duties as assigned (i.e., lunch, recess, early morning care, bus)
- Support events including school dances, graduation, school musical, promotional videos, field day, field and field trips
- Attend and participate in weekly faculty meetings
- Attend and engage in regular planning meetings and supervision meetings
- Attend to other duties as specified by supervisor and division head

Desired Qualifications & Skill Sets
- Master's degree preferred
- 3+ years of teaching math and/or science at the upper elementary or middle school level
- Experience working as part of a collaborative team of teachers
- A background in a materials-based discovery approach to mathematics and/or science
- an understanding of inquiry based pedagogy and e xperience with developing curriculum
- knowledge and understanding of child development and constructivist teaching
- experience with both standards-based assessment and progressive teaching methods
- an ability to effectively differentiate instruction
- experience with anti-bias and culturally responsive pedagogy
- strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal
- an ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, and administration
- proficiency with incorporating technology into the classroom to enhance learning
- a commitment to professional development and lifelong learning
- demonstrated classroom management skills
