System One is in search of a motivated Materials Engineer to assist the Materials and Chemistry Discipline team's engineering projects. This position involves collaborating with a skilled group of engineers dedicated to enhancing materials processing, supply chain growth, and supplier approval for advanced materials and components used in sodium cooled fast reactors. The role entails conducting various materials development and testing tasks within a laboratory situated in Everett, WA. A key responsibility of this role is to oversee laboratory equipment and materials while conducting diverse materials testing and characterization to aid the Natrium reactor design. Responsibilities Perform a wide range laboratory-based materials development experiments to support the Natrium reactor, including tribology, corrosion, mechanical tests, and characterization   Assist with the design, fabrication, and operation of custom laboratory experiments Generate test reports detailing tests and resulting data to document new knowledge related to reactor design and qualification Act as the custodian and expert operator of laboratory equipment (e.g., tribology rig, furnaces, polishing equipment, metallography equipment, SEM-EDS), developing procedures and training users to the procedures Perform SEM-EDS characterization for a wide range of materials issues Perform formal receipt inspections of incoming materials, update inventory, and physically maintain the controlled material storage area Ideal Background A Technology, Bachelors, or advanced degree with related experience, or equivalent experience. A degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline is desired. Demonstrated hands-on laboratory experience Lab management experience (e.g., maintaining spaces and/or equipment and training users) Metallography and SEM-EDS experience Ability to work with minimum direction to solve challenging problems The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly, and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork.
