Maintenance Mechanic/Relief Operator – Water Treatment Plant
Engineering and Public Works

The City currently has a position open for Relief Operator/Mechanic. Under the supervision of the Plant Manager, this position performs routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Performs duties of plant operator, custodial duties, and maintains buildings and fixtures. This is a bargaining unit position. The probation period for this position is 90 calendar days, with up to 60 additional days if documented deficiencies are present.

The position starts with a pay rate of $22.96 per hour. The normal schedule September 16 through May 15 is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and May 16 through September 15 is Wednesday through Sunday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The regular reporting location for this position will be the Water Treatment Plant. 395 West State Street, Athens, OH 45701. A Civil Service Exam will be administered for this position on Friday, April 19th, 2024 at 10 a.m. at City Hall, 8 E. Washington St., Athens, OH 45701. Applicants must show a valid, government issued Picture ID for entry to the test. Applicants must achieve a minimum passing score of 70% on the exam. To be eligible for military credit, a copy of the DD-214 showing honorable discharge must be submitted with the application packet. Members of the National Guard are also eligible for 15% credit. Military or National Guard credit is only applied to a passing score and only one military credit may be used. No further notice will be given about the exam. Essential Functions: Performs basic maintenance on vehicles, and heavy equipment. Maintains all equipment and backup equipment used in the treatment of water or wastewater, such as pumps, air compressors, vacuum pumps, and chemical feeders. Performs preventive maintenance such as lubrication of motors and pumps. Performs plumbing and electrical work for repairing and changing of systems. Repairs and paints buildings and fixtures. Performs custodial and grounds-keeping duties. Prepares requisitions for parts and supplies. Records all maintenance activities. Performs duties of plant operator when necessary. Operates heavy-duty equipment such as bobcat loader, backhoe, brush hog, tractor, spreader, dump truck with air brakes. Assumes other responsibilities and performs other related duties as needed. Position Qualifications: Completion of high school, vocational or trade school, or GED. Must possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Must have some knowledge of occupational hazards. Knowledge of and prior experience working with motors, mechanical equipment, tools, and vehicles, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must obtain and maintain an Ohio commercial driver's license during probationary period. As a condition of continued employment, must obtain a Class I Operator's License within three years of employment date and would be preferable for employee to obtain Class II Operator's License within four years of employment date (or two years after transfer). Must obtain First Aid and CPR certification at the time of the next available class; those certified in First Aid/CPR are considered occupationally-at-risk for bloodborne pathogens. Position Specifications Must be able to meet the attendance requirements of a 24-hour operation, including frequent shift changes. Must comply with required safety practices and procedures. Majority of shift is spent standing, walking, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting, carrying, and moving equipment and supplies. Climbing into lift stations 30 feet below ground, climbing on well towers 20 feet high is also required. With assistance, lifts heavy equipment, barrels, and cylinders. Shoveling, sweeping, mopping, cleaning, mowing, trimming required on a regular basis. Follow written and oral instructions, read labels, complete reports and logs, enter data on computer, requisition supplies, inventory supplies. Good communications, organizational, interpersonal, and basic math skills. The City may consider any other equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
