Overview:
As a Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA), you will play a vital role in providing compassionate care to elderly patients or residents in healthcare settings such as nursing homes and rehabilitative Care Centers
You will work under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) or licensed practical nurses (LPNs) to ensure the physical and emotional well-being of elderly individuals. Your primary responsibilities will revolve around assisting with daily activities, monitoring patient health, and providing companionship and support to improve their quality of life.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist elderly patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and eating.
Help patients with mobility by transferring them in and out of beds, chairs, or wheelchairs, and assisting with walking or exercise routines.
Monitor vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respiration, and report any abnormalities to the nursing staff.
Observe and document changes in patients' conditions or behaviors and communicate effectively with the nursing team to ensure appropriate interventions are implemented.
Provide emotional support and companionship to elderly patients, engaging in conversation, recreational activities, or simply offering a reassuring presence.
Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for patients, including organizing rooms, changing linens, and ensuring proper sanitation practices.
Follow established protocols and procedures for infection control, patient safety, and emergency response, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and facility policies.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare team members, including nurses, physicians, therapists, and social workers, to coordinate care plans and address patient needs effectively. Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills in geriatric care, dementia management, and other relevant areas.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a state-approved nursing assistant training program preferred. Certification as a Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Geriatric Nursing Assistant experience.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact empathetically and effectively with elderly patients and their families.
Physical stamina and ability to perform tasks that may require lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
Compassion, patience, and a genuine desire to improve the quality of life for elderly individuals.
Basic knowledge of medical terminology, infection control practices, and safety regulations.
Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment and follow instructions from supervisory staff.
Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and willingness to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
By fulfilling your role as a Geriatric Nursing Assistant with dedication and empathy, you will contribute significantly to the well-being and comfort of elderly patients, helping them maintain dignity and independence in their later years.
