FLSA Status: Non-Exempt GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the supervision of Fleet Services, this position performs difficult and skilled mechanical work on a large variety of automotive equipment, school buses, county government vehicles, police cars, department of utilities vehicles, fire & rescue vehicles. The ability to operate specialized tools is required. MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintenance Responsibilities Performs basic mechanical work. Changes tires and respond to road service calls. Diagnoses and repairs injector systems (gas and diesel). Repairs or overhauls brake systems (air and hydraulic). Performs engine tune-ups using standard testing equipment. Performs electrical repairs, including replacement of electrical components, starters, generators, and alternators, etc. Inspects light heavy duty vehicles for compliance with Virginia State Inspection Standards. Performs custodial shop maintenance, pickup, and delivery duties as needed. Support and demonstrate core values of Fleet Services Department Engage in ongoing professional development relevant to position. Respond promptly and thoroughly to written and oral requests for information. Maintain a clean, neat appearance, appropriate to position. Maintain a record of appropriate attendance and punctuality. Serve as an optimal role model for students, colleagues, and the general public. Work in close harmony with colleagues, supervisors, and co-workers. Comply with all District and School policies and regulations, including but not limited to guidelines for confidentiality. Perform other related duties as required/assigned. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High School Diploma or its equivalent. Considerable experience in repairing automotive, truck and power driven equipment that may vary in make and model (domestic and imported) gas and diesel. Possess or be qualified to obtain a valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License within a 90-day period from date of employment. Possess or be qualified to obtain a valid Virginia State Inspection License within a 90-day period from the date of employment. ASE Certification preferred ASE/EVT Certification preferred for Fire & Rescue Technicians. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge Methods, procedures, tools, and equipment used in the diagnosis and report of passenger cars, trucks, buses and construction as well as different types of maintenance equipment, domestic and imported. ABS brake systems and computer brake systems required. Ignition systems (early model) and computer systems. Cooling systems, water pumps, radiators and heating systems, fans relays and heat pumps. Electrical systems, computer relays and switches. Skills Use and operation of shop tools and machinery, i.e. drills, presses, grinders, micrometers, drum and rotor resurfacing machines, welding and cutting equipment, modern tire changer, computer wheel balance, computer analyzer, A/C service machine, R12 and R34 A/C recover and recycling machine, antifreeze recycling machine, millimeters and other test equipment. Abilities Keep records of repairs and service, compute time and keep parts recorded for parts department Follow oral and written directions including knowledge of English grammar, usage and spelling. Work cooperatively in a team environment to meet goals Organize and perform work independently Work on multiple projects while meeting all deadlines Show sustained effort and enthusiasm in quality and quantity of work WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Work environment can be inside or outside, with moderate noise, temperatures that are subject to extreme heat and/or cold, and frequent exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements. The work is moderate work, requiring exertion of up to 50 pounds of force to move or lift objects. The following physical and mental abilities are representative of those expected to complete the essential functions of the job: Physical ability to work primarily with fingers Perceive the nature of sounds Make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, express or exchange ideas by the spoken word, substantial movements (motions) with the hands, wrists, and/or fingers, and discern letters or numbers at a given distance.
