Job Description/Responsibilities
Reporting to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean of LIS serves as an institutional academic leader with the Provost, and campus administrators, and other deans.
The Dean of LIS serves as chief administrative officer of LIS, providing vision, strategic direction, and operational leadership to the unit. The Dean leads LIS in fiscal management, development, and advocacy and is responsible for advancing the impact of LIS to meet the needs of contemporary library users. The Dean creates an environment that supports expert practice and scholarly research. The Dean builds a diverse community through collaboration and communication to support the missions of both LIS and the University. Currently, LIS has 15 full-time faculty and 14 full-time staff.
The Dean will collaborate with SIUE Schools, the College of Arts & Sciences, and the Southern Illinois University System, acting as an institutional, academic leader. They will guide academic operations with support from the Chancellor and Provost & Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs to further LIS' efforts within the campus, system, and broader community They will demonstrate an abiding commitment to anti racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and by implementing inclusive policies and practices, leading to equitable outcomes.



Primary Administrative Duties: Leads LIS involvement in university and division-specific strategic initiatives Makes inclusive decisions about the library based on a holistic approach to library management Acts as fiscal manager for LIS, making decisions about budget, and personnel Supervises all full and part-time faculty librarians Uses data to assess library impact of space, services, technologies, and collections to support student learning, faculty teaching, and scholarship Engages campus partners and stakeholders while acting as a steward of university space in Lovejoy Library Supports an outreach plan that embeds LIS' presence across campus and in the community Collaborates with the SIUE Foundation to raise funds to support LIS Primary Leadership Duties: Balances leadership role within LIS and the University to close equity gaps and achieve ambitious goals set forth in the University's strategic plan Serves as an institutional academic leader on Dean's Council and participates in the shared governance of the University Mentors and supports faculty through the tenure process and beyond Invests in ongoing professional development opportunities to support evolving roles for faculty and staff within LIS Inspires a rewarding workplace environment that emphasizes excellence and collaboration Primary Library Support Services Duties: Ensures the academic success of students by providing inclusive and innovative services to support student success, retention, and graduation rates Engages campus and surrounding communities in activities to support research and scholarship Encourages the growth of the Information Literacy Instruction Program while modeling the information literacy skillset of a professional librarian Establishes an online learning environment that promotes the delivery of information literacy skills to distance, graduate, post-traditional, and international students Supports the application of new technologies that enhance information delivery and discovery Minimum Qualifications Master's degree in library science or library and information science from an ALA-accredited university Demonstrated experience in a leadership role within academic or research libraries and/or professional library organizations A record of professional achievement in librarianship, scholarship, and service, in an academic or research library setting that would merit appointment to the rank of associate professor at SIUE Demonstrated experience in carrying out the responsibilities of a higher education administrator including, but not limited to personnel supervision, library operations, fiscal management, and external relations Excellent communication skills Evidence of a commitment to ensuring antiracism, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated experience in data-driven decision making Demonstrated experience with assessment and communicating the positive impact of the library Demonstrated experience with budgeting and resource allocation A record of professional achievement in librarianship, scholarship, and service, in an academic or research library setting that would merit appointment to the rank of professor Fundraising and donor cultivation, external communication, and/or advocacy experience Library and Information Services (LIS) at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) is an innovative, student-centered unit that seeks to foster the best of emancipatory education. The library's information literacy curriculum aims to foster the dispositions, attitudes, and skills necessary to collaborate effectively and respectfully in a diverse world and to empower people to take up the challenge of solving the problems that confront our world. The library supports exploratory students by providing opportunities for emancipatory discovery through interaction with programming, collections, and pedagogy.
The library's collaborative spaces, equipped with modern technology, inspire group study sessions and facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations. Moreover, the library hosts a variety of workshops, lectures, and exhibitions that enrich campus life and promote lifelong learning. LIS consists of Lovejoy Library on the campus of SIUE as well as the Biomedical Library in Alton, which serves the School of Dental Medicine.
