Judge Shan Wang is seeking a motivated, professional individual to serve as a judicial law clerk. Law Clerks work directly with the District Court Judge performing professional legal research, preparing memoranda, opinions, and orders, and performing related administrative work. This position provides support for the functions of a Judge to uphold the Court's mission of providing justice through a system that assures equal access for the fair and timely resolution of cases and controversies.

You'll be able to use your legal research and writing skills, work as part of a judge team, and observe all types of court calendars and proceedings. Law Clerks have the opportunity to work on a variety of assignments and observe different types of court proceedings including criminal, civil, probate, family, juvenile, and conciliation cases. The primary work location will be a located in Stearns County, St. Cloud, MN. However, flexibility for remote and hybrid options may be available.

What You Will Do The following are examples of major job duties expected of this position: Review, study, research, and annotate laws, court decisions, documents, opinions, briefs, and related legal authorities. Prepare briefs, legal memoranda, and jury instructions, including appropriate suggestions or recommendations to the judge or referee. Compile references on laws and decisions necessary for legal determinations. Confer with judge, referee or court official concerning legal questions, construction of documents and granting of orders. Attend court sessions to hear oral arguments and record necessary case information; maintain records attendant to court proceedings. Courtroom duties, including: taking court minutes; calling the calendar; swearing in jury panels and witness; and assisting in various court proceedings such as arraignments, motions, hearings, pre-trial conferences, and trials. Administrative duties as assigned. What You Will Bring Knowledge of laws, court rules, and sources of legal reference.  Knowledge of court practices and procedures.  Knowledge of legal terminology and concepts.  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, with a diverse group of people including attorneys and pro se parties.  Ability to research complex legal problems or questions and apply legal principles.  Ability to represent the court in a respectful manner.  Skill in the operation of a personal computer with word processing and legal research software.  Ability to professionally exhibit cultural sensitivity, patience, and understanding in the course of work duties. The anticipated starting annual salary for this position is $65,217 for 0-1 years of post-law school legal experience up to $71,739 depending on experience for external hires, with a full future earning potential of $65,217 -$78,261 annually.
