Join the Department of Community Corrections and Rehabilitation (DOCCR) as a Testing Laboratory Assistant Intern. The intern will work with laboratory assistant's and medical laboratory technicians to gain knowledge and experience. This position will support the duties and functions of our testing lab. This will include the collection and testing of urinalysis samples for the Department of Community Corrections and Rehabilitation collection of DNA samples for the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

This position is onsite at the Hennepin County Government Center, 300 South Sixth Street, Minneapolis, MN 55487 and the Probation Center North 4336 Lyndale Avenue North Minneapolis, MN.   The hours of the drug testing lab are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. The work schedule will vary to meet these needs and will not exceed 40 hours per week. This internship is intended to start in June 2024 and last through August 2024, with the potential to extend. Ba sed on current requirements, hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.   About the position type:

T his position requires direct observation of male clients submitting urinalysis, so being male has been determined to be a Bona Fide Occupational Qualification (BFOQ), therefore this position must be filled by a male applicant. Duties are designed in order to provide work experience that meets the department's needs and complements the student's educational program.  

In this position, you will: Collect specimens from patients for both DNA and urinalysis testing.  Register patients, customers, and input test data into computer systems.  Properly identify, label, process and distribute specimens.  Accept orders, schedule testing, report results and communicate other information using multi-line telephone.  Respond appropriately to internal and external customer needs.  Maintain work area and supplies.  Comply with safety regulations and work rules.  Teach specimen collection/specimen processing/client services processes and procedures to employees and students.  Explain processes and procedures to patients, customers, and their families.  Need to have: One of the following:
Current enrollment in a technical/vocation, associate or bachelor's degree program in laboratory science, biology, chemistry or another related field. Recent graduate (within 6 months) in a technical/vocation, associate or bachelor's degree program in laboratory science, biology, chemistry or another related field.   Completion of biology or chemistry college courses. Nice to have: Experience: In a clinical laboratory setting.  Administering urinalysis for the purpose of drug testing. Working with chemically dependent clients. Handling highly confidential client medical information. Working in a lab setting using a drug testing specimen analyzer. Knowledge of: Basic laboratory procedures, terminology and correct specimen collection procedure. United States of America criminal justice system. Ability to: Communicate clearly with others. Provide customer service. Work as part of a team. Develop and maintain interpersonal working relationships with patients, customers, their families, and members of the healthcare team.
