Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:45pm
Job Summary: The International Student Advisor represents International Services to University researchers, professors, visiting scholars, and undergraduate and graduate students and their dependents. Provides accurate and timely information regarding relevant immigration rules and regulations under general supervision. Processes immigration documents. Serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) for The University of Alabama, and an Alternative Responsible Officer (ARO), interpreting and following the regulations governed by the Department of Homeland Security.
Additional Department Summary: The International Student Advisor I supports F-1 and J-1 Student visa for The University of Alabama. Coordinates with the student and academic units to advise on maintenance of status and timely filing of necessary petitions with the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for F-1 Student sponsorship. Coordinates with departments and international students to process documents with the Department of Homeland Security's Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) and ensure compliance with Department of State regulatory requirements for J-1 Student visa sponsorship.
Interfaces with the Department of Homeland Security's Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) and United Stated Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Works within the government system, the Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), ISSM and Banner to issue I-20s and DS-2019s to F-1 and J-1 students, employment authorizations, extensions and multiple other functions that require adjudication by SEVP/USCIS. Keeps The University of Alabama in compliance with DHS, DOS, and DOL federal regulations with regard to F-1 and J-1 international student enrollment and employment. Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher and some experience. Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident in order to be authorized as an F-1 Designated School Official with the Department of Homeland Security's Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) and as a J-1 Alternate Responsible Officer with the Department of State's BridgeUSA Exchange Visitor Program (EVP).

Skills and Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of current student and scholar polices and procedures of relevant regulatory bodies, most notably the Student Exchange Visitor Program, regarding issuing the appropriate non-immigrant visa documents. Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Excellent interpersonal skills. Proficient computer skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Some work experience in international education, higher education, or related area.
