By joining our Crittenden County Unit as a Highway Technician Assistant II in Crittenden County, you'll have the opportunity to perform basic level work and assist with intermediate level work in roadway or roadside maintenance operations. Learns to operate intermediate level equipment such as, but not limited, to asphalt distributors, asphalt hot boxes, asphalt recyclers, backhoes, belt loaders, concrete mixers, front-end loaders, hydro- seeders, pipe cleaners, road wideners, rollers, skid steers with attachments, slope mowers, tandem dump trucks, and tow pavers; and performs other duties as required.
Assists with technical tasks in support of agency engineering programs such as, but not limited to, quality assurance and material calculations while training under the responsibility of a Highway Technician or Engineer; and performs other duties as required. (Engineering decisions recommended by positions of the class must be approved by a Licensed Professional Engineer under KRS Chapter 322.)
Holders of the Highway Technician Assistant II position will complete tasks such as: Haul material to and from job sites using dump truck or tandem dump truck. Operate dump trucks with snowplow and salt spreader in the winter months. Learn to operate the loaders, mow-trim, and other specialized equipment. Learn and assist with basic surveying activities on construction projects. Set up a correct work zone and flag traffic for operations requiring traffic control. Holders of this job title will obtain: Learns teamwork Learns to operate specialized equipment and tools. EDUCATION: High school graduate.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have two years of construction or highway maintenance experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial drafting, design technology, construction technology, or a related field will substitute for two (2) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. College coursework related to any of these fields will substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a Class B commercial driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification.. The employee must successfully complete the KYTC Highway Technician Academy Level 1 or equivalent within one year of employment in this job classification.
Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
