The Health Educator provides education to women, families and other professionals in the areas of childbirth, breastfeeding, women's health and the early postpartum period, parenting, newborn care, wellness and childhood safety/injury prevention. The educator maintains current knowledge base in these and related areas, and employs a variety of learning methodologies geared toward the adolescent and adult client. The educator is a communication link with the client and the health care system. The educator participates actively in the development, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the program.
EDUCATION: Provides education to adolescent and adult clients, staff and other health care providers in a manner that supports and promotes optimal health. May provide teaching regarding childbirth preparation, neonatal wellness, childhood safety/injury prevention and women's topics utilizing a variety of methods, including group settings. Provides teaching on related subjects, such as lactation, fathering, and hospital tours. Participates effectively in the development, review, revision, and distribution of educational materials. Utilizes educational materials and methodologies as reviewed and approved by Legacy Health. Incorporates principles of family centered care into teaching activities. Develops and implements effective teaching strategies for adolescents and adults, includes culturally specific approaches as appropriate. Maintains a current knowledge base within the area of expertise. Provides teaching based on current knowledge; identifies resources used for approaches and recommendations. Utilizes effective communication and assessment skills to identify group and individual needs and assists clients in setting realistic goals and expectations. Develops individualized plans for client learning, using multidisciplinary resources if needed, and provides means of follow-up. Provides education to other care providers as appropriate. Provides education within the community setting. EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT: Evaluates educational efforts to recommend alternatives that will promote continuous improvement. Utilizes effective problem solving and conflict resolution skills as needed. Notifies coordinator in a timely manner of issues to be addressed on a system level. Communicates client issues or concerns to Coordinator and attending physician in an effective and timely manner, utilizing verbal and written reports. Reviews, updates, and utilizes program curricula and materials for health education classes. Participates in program planning and development of services. Reviews existing classes and community approaches for currency. Contributes knowledge of national issues, personal expertise, and consumer input to development of new and effective approaches. Maintains effective communication with physician office and hospital staff to facilitate an ongoing, consistent educational program for individual clients. Demonstrates knowledge of and adherence to appropriate hospital policies, such as Human Resources. ROLE DEVELOPMENT AND ADVOCACY: Maintains and utilizes knowledge base in providing education to adolescent and adult clients. Works collaboratively with other educators and health care providers to advocate for and facilitate optimal health through education. Provides information to others that promotes understanding and support of education, particularly prenatal education. Identifies areas and subjects for ongoing personal and team development. Obtains information regarding program through attendance at staff meetings or written updates. Demonstrates ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment, in a manner that utilizes flexibility in scheduling, work hours, and approach. Demonstrates commitment and sensitivity in working with culturally diverse, adolescent and adult populations. Utilizes effective communication skills with peers and others. Reviews peers in classroom setting a minimum of annually. Graduate of an accredited secondary school; 2 years of advanced education in health care, education, or related field required. College degree in related field preferred. Equivalent work and/or educational experience considered.
Demonstrated ability of positive interpersonal and communication skills with colleagues, patients, families, physicians and the community.
