Job Description and Duties **This is a re-advertisement. Candidates who previously applied do not need to re-apply.** The Watershed Mitigation, Coordination, and Outreach Unit is dedicated supporting state, federal, tribal, and local stakeholders to facilitate the safety of lives and protection of property in the face of diverse geological hazards. These hazards encompass, but are not limited to, post-fire debris flows, mudslides, and landslides. Using cutting-edge remote sensing efforts, proactive planning, strategic coordination, and community outreach, this unit works to advise on or implement effective measures that mitigate the impact of geohazards, ensuring resilience and safeguarding the well-being of communities across the State of California. 
Under general direction of the Program Manager I, the Associate Environmental Planner (AEP) supports the unit's mission by contributing to environmental planning, assessment, and coordination efforts aimed at safeguarding lives and properties across California from various geohazards, including but not limited to post-fire debris flows, mudslides, and landslides. The AEP works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to ensure that environmental considerations are integrated into the unit's geohazard response, mitigation, preparedness, and recovery efforts. Duties include but not limited to the following:
Responsible for applying environmental planning expertise to geohazard response, recovery, preparedness, and mitigation activities. Conducts detailed environmental assessments in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) to understand the impact of geohazards on California's landscapes. Collaborates with environmental experts and agencies to develop innovative solutions for addressing geohazards while minimizing ecological impact. Maintains detailed records of regulatory compliance efforts. Provides expert guidance on environmental best practices for geohazard mitigation efforts. Collaborates with external agencies and organizations to leverage additional resources and expertise for geohazard projects, fostering partnerships and enhancing project outcomes. Working Conditions This position is located in the Watershed Mitigation, Coordination, and Outreach Unit in Mather.
Telework - This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule which includes up to two days of remote work per week. Additional in office days may be required based on the business need. DMV Pull Program - Participation in the DMV Pull Program is required. The position(s) require(s) a valid Driver's License (DL). You must answer the questions addressing your DL on your application. Demonstrated experience in conducting environmental assessments, developing plans, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, such as NEPA and CEQA. Works well in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment, where the ability to take initiative and handle both regular tasks and sudden assignments is crucial. Strong understanding of geohazards, including post-fire debris flows, mudslides, and landslides, and their environmental impacts on landscapes. Experience in project coordination and management, including developing project plans, tracking progress, and coordinating resources to ensure timely and successful project outcomes. Proficiency in analyzing environmental data, utilizing GIS tools, and conducting environmental impact assessments to inform mitigation strategies. Capability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with staff, officials, and organizations. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team environment. Proven experience fostering a culture of innovation and creative problem-solving. Possess outstanding customer service skills. Effective and confident public speaker with the ability to convey complex information clearly to diverse audiences. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with tools such as Smartsheet.
