GENERAL PURPOSE Under the supervision of the Deputy Chief or Battalion Chief, the Captain manages the activities and operations of one or more sections within the department (i.e. administration, training, operations, logistics, special operations, volunteer liaison, privacy officer, etc.); within assigned areas, ensure compliance with local, state and federal guidelines; plans, organizes, and directs multi-company operations at emergency incidents and planned events; and provides general and complex assistance to their assigned supervisor.
POSITION(S) SUPERVISED Firefighter(s); as assigned Engineer(s); as assigned Paramedic(s); as assigned AEMT(s); as assigned ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Meet performance standards established with direct supervisor. Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review, provide, and participate in the work activities of a crew or company responsible for providing fire suppression, emergency medical services, technical rescue, haz-mat response, fire prevention, inspections, in-service training, maintenance of equipment, apparatus, and facilities, and other related emergency and non-emergency services. Establish the Incident Command System (ICS) at all emergencies; assume the duties and responsibilities of the Incident Commander, Command Staff, and/or ICS General Staff at emergency incidents and planned events until relieved by a superior officer. Assist with the selection of assigned staff; direct, supervise, mentor, and evaluate assigned staff; counsel, commend or discipline personnel as appropriate. Perform assigned ancillary duties involving the administration to include: prevention, public education, inspections, inventory, training, fleet, equipment and facility maintenance, or other related duties. Participate in the preparation and administration of the assigned budget; conduct research and submit budget recommendations. Assist administrative staff in monitoring and evaluate the effectiveness of services. Identify opportunities for improvement. Assist with the development of goals and objectives. Manage the implementation of changes. Perform a variety of administrative duties. Prepare reports and forms. Conduct research, and prepare and present recommendations. Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of related new trends and innovations. Respond to and resolve difficult complaints and inquiries. Operate a variety of equipment, tools, devices and vehicles as required to perform assigned duties. Perform other duties as assigned. Must be able to meet attendance and punctuality requirements for this position. Must abide by all city policies and procedures. Must work well with others and be a team player.
Applicants will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED. Associate degree is preferred. Three (3) years full-time fire and/or EMS related experience; or six (6) years volunteer/part-time fire and/or EMS related experience. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to command a control fire and EMS incidents Ability to work with the public. Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing. Skill in word processing and computer operations. Perform physical lifting and heavy maneuvering. Thorough knowledge of department policies and procedures. Ability to make sound decisions. Special Qualifications: Must be: AEMT or Paramedic certified with the State of Utah or NREMT. ACLS, BLS, and PALS Certifications. Certified Firefighter I & II in the State of Utah. Certified Fire Officer I. Fire Inspector I or Company Officer Inspector (within 1 year of hire) Wildland Red Card Certified (within 1 year of hire) NIMS 100, 200, 700a, and 800b Certifications. Completion of ICS 300 & 400 is preferred. Must have a valid Utah State driver's license. Must meet physical fitness requirements as established by the fire department and city.
