Full job description OVERVIEW: Seeking two experienced filmmakers for one-month, part-time, contractual positions as mentors to teams of amateur youth filmmakers as part of an arts & culture program called Filmbuilding Malden. This is a city-funded program run by a media education organization (filmbuilding.org) in partnership with the City of Malden Mayor's Youth Summer Employment Program (MYSEP).The contract period for this position is July 16th — August 15th.
Mentors will provide guidance and expertise to small groups of young creatives with varying skill levels as they co-create short films that explore their local community of Malden, MA. Responsibilities include facilitation of group discussions during project development sessions, guidance related to story development, planning, filming, and editing, and ongoing communication with program leadership.
Ability to work on-site at Malden City Hall is required. Mentors will help lead in-person project development sessions in tandem with program leadership for a total of seven sessions. In September, mentors will be asked to take a small participatory role in a public screening of the completed films.
This position offers the opportunity to learn up close about an innovative discovery-based filmmaking process that promotes co-creative learning across different lived experiences, backgrounds, and skill levels. Selected applicants will be part of an ongoing experiment to expand social cohesion and access to creative storytelling in a city known for its unique cultural, social, and economic diversity.
Mentors are not directors or producers, but rather guides and supporters of the filmmaking process. This program is rooted in the belief that exploration, creative freedom, and problem-solving make up the foundation of film and moving image art. Some parts of the program curriculum are designed to interrogate, de-program, or de-center traditional filmmaking methods and pedagogy.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Attend and help run in-person project development sessions in tandem with program leadership Manage group progress through curriculum oversight and ongoing mentorship Accompanying youth groups as they travel around Malden to film their projects Use project and planning skills to help groups manage their time and keep their projects on track Support in troubleshooting idea development, filming, editing, logistics, and other creative challenges Oversee the periodic documentation and evaluation of groups Maintain regular communication with program leadership about group progress Participate in a panel discussion during September screening event Provide video commentary and complete a survey about your experience and the program outcome QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working with under-resourced and underprivileged youth Demonstrable experience as a filmmaker with in-depth knowledge of the filmmaking process (especially documentary film) Expertise with non-linear editing software (e.g. DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere, Avid Pro) Ability to work with and guide beginners and non-professionals Superior communication, organization, collaboration, and problem solving skills Enthusiasm, commitment, patience, and love of learning or exploring Excellent interpersonal skills and comfort working with people of diverse identities and backgrounds Ability to communicate comfortably in English; fluency in a second language is highly desired Flexibility and willingness to occasionally work outside of 9-5 business hours COMMITMENT & SCHEDULE: Approximately 50-60 hours over the course of one month (7/16-8/15). This includes:

THURSDAY — August 15th, 9:00AM-4:00PM
Online/virtual communication with group members Final Event in September Please note that the above is likely the final schedule, but tentative at this point in time. Therefore, if you have a conflict with some of these dates, we encourage you to apply to this position anyway. LOCATION: This position is a hybrid of in-person and online/virtual work.
The seven project development sessions require you to work on-site at Malden City Hall located at 215 Pleasant St, Malden, MA 02148. For those who drive, there is plenty of street parking and three nearby parking garages within a 5 minute walk. For those taking public transit, the MBTA Malden Center station (orange Line and several bus lines) is across the street from City Hall.
Online/virtual work including the training session before the start of the program, and ongoing communication with both the youth filmmakers and the program leadership. There are no set times for this. Scheduling partially requires setting your own availability and partially accommodating the youth filmmakers' availability.
COMPENSATION: $2,500 for the entire contract period. This works out to $42-50 an hour based on 50-60 total hours estimate.
