POSITION PURPOSE
The mission of the Doctor of Optometry program at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions is to prepare skilled optometric physicians as leaders and role models who define excellence in optometric medicine, are deeply committed to competent and respectful patient care, ethical and impactful scientific research, and who are engaged in compassionate public service that improves the health of the diverse communities in which they serve.
Faculty members of the College of Optometry have academic, instruction, service, practice and/or scholarship responsibilities consistent with the mission of the College of Optometry. Faculty members participate in university governance and assist in planning, coordinating, facilitating, administering, and monitoring all activities related to the Optometry program. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Communication Maintain optimal communication with administration, faculty, students and community partners regarding university and program initiatives. Student Instruction and Curriculum Management Participate in program curriculum and course design, assessment, and evaluation. Participate in student admission, progression, and advisement activities. Prepare class materials using best practices in optometric education. Provide direct student instruction in online, on-site, and clinical settings. Governance Initiate, adopt, evaluate and advance the program's mission, goals and outcomes of the College of Optometry and the University. Provide opportunity for students and peers to evaluate teaching effectiveness. Evaluate and recommend faculty members for promotion. Participate in all regularly scheduled department meetings and other University events. Scholarship and/or Practice Engage in scholarly activities commensurate with appointment and rank. Maintain a clinical practice commensurate with licensure and appropriate for appointment and rank. Leadership and Service Serve on program, university, state, and national committees that are appropriate for their rank and experience. Participate in professional and community activities for the purpose of bringing education, service, and research together for the improvement of health care delivery. Accept opportunities for membership on standing and ad-hoc committees of the program and University as elected or appointed. WORKING REQUIREMENTS/CONDITIONS Education and Certification: Must have an earned Doctorate in Optometry or a terminal degree in a field that aligns with the appropriate subject matter that will be taught. Licensed optometrists must be eligible for optometric licensure in the State of Utah. Required Knowledge: Demonstrate knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal, and practice issues affecting contemporary optometric education. Experience Required: Active in optometric organizations at local, state, and/or national levels (preferred). Four or more years of recent practice as an optometrist (preferred). Completion of an Optometric residency or additional graduate level degree (preferred) Prior experience in teaching at a College of Optometry (preferred) Skills/Abilities: Able to work with students, faculty/staff with special needs based on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Able to participate in all aspects of peer review and shared governance. Able to pass a criminal background search prior to commencement of employment. Strong leadership, communication, organization, interpersonal, problem-solving skills (preferred). Administrative experience in academic governance and/or clinical practice (preferred). Demonstrated ability to design and conduct independent and/or collaborative research (preferred). Able to work both independently and as an interdisciplinary team member (preferred). Able to travel, as needed (preferred).
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION

Average, ordinary visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or products or operate machinery. Physical Strength:
Sedentary work. Sitting most of the time. Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally. (Almost all office jobs.)

No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions. (Such as in a typical office.)
MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization.
Able to interpret various instructions. Mathematics Ability:
Ability to perform basic math skills, use decimals to compute ratios and percentages, and to draw and interpret graphs. Language Ability:
Ability to read a variety of books, magazines, instruction manuals, atlases, and encyclopedias.
Ability to prepare memos, reports, and essays using proper punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
