The Exercise Specialist is responsible for the development and implementation of Fitness & Sports Performance (FSP) programs for athletes (youth, junior high school, high school, collegiate, adult, and elite), groups of athletes (youth, junior high school, high school, collegiate, adult, and elite), individual athletes (youth, junior high school, high school, collegiate, adult, and elite), industrial (jobs that require intensive physical activity or lifting), tactical (police, fire, emergency medical) athletes, medical fitness, corporate fitness & chronic disease and disabled participants. Accountabilities include screening, needs analysis, fitness and sports performance assessments, development of fitness and strength and conditioning, medical fitness & chronic disease & disabled population exercise programs with emphasis on development of evidence-based outcomes. Incumbent is responsible for providing education on recommended training, conditioning and exercise changes, injury prevention, performance, and functionally-based exercise technique. The incumbent will also engage in community outreach and sales activities to build a client base for St Luke's Fitness & Sports Performance (SLFSP). JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Conducts fitness and sports performance (FSP) training sessions. Provides FSP instruction to individuals and groups according to SLFSP guidelines. Assures that the fitness and sports performance participants will be working in a fun and safe environment. Develops and implements fitness and sports performance programs for youth, junior high school, high school, adult, and elite athletes, industrial and tactical service personnel, youth, adolescent, adult, senior and chronic disease and disabled fitness participants. Maintains orderly control of FSP individual and group sessions at all times. Provides FSP training programs off-site. Assess clients for sports, industrial, tactical, fitness, human or functional performance. Recognize the need for performance modifications and/or injury risk factor education. Perform fitness and sports performance, industrial, tactical, and fitness assessments with emphasis on sports, human, functional and fitness performance enhancement. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate sports, industrial, tactical, human & fitness exercise programs. Develop and implement individualized exercise prescriptions according to fitness and sports performance clientele need. Review, evaluate and revise the established program weekly or as necessary. Assess fitness and sports performance clientele injury profile and performance level. Prepare and conduct both formal and informal education sessions. Supervise exercise, monitor participant exertion level if needed to identify adverse response to training. Recognize the need for and initiate collaboration with other team members, physicians, rehabilitation professionals, registered dieticians and other service providers to proactively resolve fitness and sports performance clientele needs. Communicate progress or change in fitness or sports performance client status. Comply with required SLFSP documentation. Orient student interns, new staff and other personnel to the goals and objectives of FSP. Educate interns, new staff and other personnel regarding goals and objectives for strength and conditioning of sport performance, industrial, tactical, human performance, fitness and medical fitness clientele. Keeps current knowledge base regarding developments or trends in fitness and sports performance, and training equipment and modalities in order to maintain/enhance expertise. Actively participate in SLFSP in-services. Participate in conferences/symposiums as able. Independently reads journals and other educational materials related to the position. Actively participate in departmental and/or procedural development. Demonstrate knowledge and ability to care for sport, industrial, tactical, human performance, fitness and medical fitness clientele using a developmental perspective. PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically capable of the potentially strenuous activities typical of someone engaged in leading FSP programs. Must be able to effectively listen and communicate with people in-person, via email or over the telephone. Must be capable of using a computer keyboard. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Must have a valid driver's license and be able to drive without restriction.
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in exercise physiology, health and physical education or a closely related field - required. Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or American College of Sports Medicine Health Fitness Specialist Certification (HFS) – preferred. BLS for Healthcare Providers (CPR and AED) Program – required.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Minimum of internship with recognized fitness and sports performance program. Preferably two (2) years' work experience as a professional training fitness and sports performance clientele.
