Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. Kinross began operating the mine in 2003, and it has since become a continuous improvement leader in the Company's portfolio. Round Mountain poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018. Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross' Nevada operations.
The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area.
Job Description Under the direction of the Sr. Environmental Engineer or Environmental Superintendent, the Environmental Specialist will assist with the implementation of programs and procedures to ensure environmental compliance for Round Mountain Gold. Participate in the development of environmental management plans, monitoring plans, and permit applications and compliance reports. Responsible for data management, including on-site document and compliance management. Ensure that sampling, monitoring, and inspections are conducted in accordance with company requirements and in compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations and licenses. Conduct all activities in a safe manner and align performance and daily functions to reflect Kinross' values. 
Job Responsibilities 1. Conduct safe, efficient, reliable, and accurate compliance sampling throughout the site operations, including but not limited to, surface water sampling, groundwater sampling, soil sampling and/or other materials as required by regulatory framework. 
2. Maintain sampling and monitoring databases for water, and other permit requirements to provide data and reports required for permit compliance.
3. Ensure RMGC compliance with the requirements of environmental permits, licenses, and regulations, focusing on monitoring, record-keeping, and reporting requirements. 
4. Effectively communicate with site personnel regarding regulatory obligations. 
5. Provide environmental awareness training to site employees.
6. Complete permitting activities in a timely manner by gathering necessary information from operational departments, and submitting complete applications, to minimize permitting delays.
7. Develop and maintain rapport with regulators and government agencies to foster a working relationship that minimizes adversarial actions, enforcement actions and penalties. 
8. Coordinate and manage environmental projects, including contractor, vendor, or consultant activities. 
9. Conduct regular inspections, in accordance with the RMGC Environmental Department procedures, of company operations to ensure regulatory compliance.
10. Inform the Environmental Superintendent immediately of any compliance or permitting issues that may affect the company. 
11. Comply with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality and code of conduct.
12. Meet or exceed the performance expectations established by management. 
13. Punctuality and regular attendance required.
14. Perform other functions as assigned by supervisor.

 
Education and Experience 1. A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
2. A bachelor's degree in engineering (environmental, civil, or mining), environmental science, natural resources management, biological sciences, or related science degree (preferred).
3. Willingness to work outdoors, often in adverse weather conditions. Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. over short distances.
4. Previous experience in the mining industry and /or managing environmental programs, or performing monitoring and sampling (preferred). Certification as a drinking water operator is a plus but not required.
5. Strong technical and analytical skills. 
6. Strong organizational and administrative skills. 
7. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Able to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and management, regulators, and governmental agencies.
8. Able to describe environmental regulatory requirements to a diverse workforce. 
9. Able to work as part of a team, in cooperation with other departments at RMGC. 
10. Able to work independently to manage workload and prioritize tasks. 
11. Experienced and skilled using the following software packages: Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, or other database software.
12. Preference will be given to experience with "Monitor Pro" or other environmental database, electronic records/obligations management system, AutoCAD, JDE or other software for procurement of goods & services, Map 3D or QGIS or other GIS software, GoldSim. 
13. Preference may be given to working experience at an open pit or underground gold mine. Experience in Nevada is a plus but not required. 
14. Must be at least 18 years old and authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. 
15. Must have a valid driver's license.
