Job Description and Duties
The Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), Inland Deserts Region has an exciting opportunity for an outgoing, independent, and highly motivated Environmental Scientist to serve as an integral part of the Habitat Conservation Cannabis Unit team. Working Conditions
Ability to use a computer keyboard and Microsoft Office software up to eight hours each day; complete office tasks that require sitting, standing, and walking to other locations; attend meetings and conference calls; visit project sites requiring driving a vehicle travel of up to four or more hours each way and sometimes including early mornings and late nights; willingness to work long hours, sometimes including early mornings, late nights and weekends; occasional overnight travel to reach some meeting or field locations; hiking over uneven and possibly steep or wet terrain at project sites for reconnaissance and biological monitoring; may include operation of or being a passenger on a boat; occasional travel of two or more days per week. Field work may include driving a 4-wheel drive vehicle or hiking long distances in rugged terrain. Must be able to work in the field in varying types of terrain, under inclement weather conditions, and at various times of day or night as required by field work protocols. Must be comfortable with carrying and moving with a 25–30-pound backpack over uneven terrain, and operating equipment in uneven terrain and inclement weather. Must possess and maintain a valid Class C driver's license and be able to operate a car, all-terrain vehicle, or 4WD vehicles. Must maintain in good order all issued program vehicles, equipment, machinery, and computers. This position is required to be in office one day per week and two additional days per month with the option to telework the remainder of the time as duties allow and with supervisor approval.

Skills: knowledge of basic principles of land, water, fish, wildlife, and other natural resources research; principles of ecology; soil and irrigation sciences, resource management, hydrology, geology, and waste prevention; statistical methods; land-use practices with reference to their general effect on human health, natural resources, agricultural productivity, and the environment; effects of hazardous and non-hazardous waste material and their interactions on the environment; chemical reactions; California and Federal environmental laws, rules, regulations, and requirements; basic toxicology, hydrology, geology, and principles of risk assessment and risk management; concepts employed in a variety of disciplines including environmental planning, economics, and resource management; geolocation and geo-referencing software applications, resource conservation program impacts and implementation strategies; and recycling issues.
