Overview The Reaching a New Energy Workforce – High Energy Physics ( RENEW - HEP ) program seeks to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals and prepare them to tackle some of the biggest questions in our universe through studies in nuclear and particle physics. This program provides each participant with dedicated PNNL mentorship as they engage in this opportunity to explore the world, what it is made of, and how it is governed. Student participants will work with their academic faculty to translate academic learning into active research aligned with ongoing activities led by premier PNNL researchers. Students will not only be equipped to make scientific advances in specific nuclear and particle physics but also acquire translatable skills and experiences that benefit society in rapidly growing sectors, such as medicine, homeland security, computing, financial institutions, IT businesses, and many others.
The RENEW - HEP program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science Office of High Energy Physics in collaboration with RENEW - HEP grant recipients. The start date is tentatively set for June 2024.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
+ Applicants must be degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled at an accredited college or university.
+ High school diploma or General Educational Development ( GED ) equivalent.
+ Applicants must have a cumulative minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
+ Applicants must be 18 years of age by start date.

HSPD -12 PIV Credential Requirement In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 ( HSPD -12) and Department of Energy ( DOE ) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD -12 Personal Identity Verification ( PIV ) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
