Job Duties
Applicants hired into this position who are not currently VA state government employees are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus upon hire with signature of a 12-month agreement. Applicants hired into this position who are currently working for VA state government are eligible for a $5,000 retention bonus after 10 months of successful service with signature of an agreement for an additional 12-months of service. Current Virginia State Police employees working in a Dispatcher function are not eligible for the retention bonus. The Virginia State Police is seeking to hire a Dispatcher Senior at the Division 2 Headquarters in Culpeper, Virginia. Dispatchers provide law enforcement members with a wide variety of support services such as conducting driver's license checks, vehicle registration checks, and conducting wanted person checks through computerized systems. You will be communicating with other law enforcement agencies, state agencies, government agencies, towing services and most importantly citizens needing assistance. Being a dispatcher can be challenging and rewarding. It is a fast-paced environment where multitasking skills are very important. You will be paired with a certified trainer for a minimum of 80 days to assist with learning the position. Other training will be provided to receive certification in VCIN and Basic Dispatch. Trains dispatchers to answer a call and enter preliminary information for all priority and non-priority calls. Trains dispatchers to operate multi-channel radio system. Answers multi-line computerized telephone system. Enters and retrieves information from the CAD terminal. Responds to inquiries and complaints and secures emergency assistance. Operates a computerized information network terminal. Minimum Qualifications Must be willing to work rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends. Working knowledge of Department policies and procedures, rules and regulations pertaining to emergency communications, equipment, and radio codes; of geographical area and locations; of safety and emergency personnel and equipment within the area; and of emergency voice/data communications equipment and procedures. Demonstrated skill in keyboarding to include Microsoft software applications. Demonstrated ability to make/monitor entries, inquiries, and retrievals made in CAD, VCIN/NCIC and NLETS according to established procedures; to work under pressure and exercise sound judgement under stress, and multi-task; to handle complaints/compliments and direct these to supervision; to lead staff, provide training, and formal instruction; to ensure safety guidelines and regulations are followed during emergency situations; to prepare reports; to work holidays and weekends; to work independently and as part of a team; and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. High school diploma or GED or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position required. Applicant must have or be eligible to apply for VCIN certification which requires either U.S. citizenship or having been a lawful resident of the U.S. for the past 10 consecutive years.
