Why does the job exist? The dispatcher uses a multi-channel radio system: answer radio calls in a clear, concise, professional and appropriate manner. Conform to established radio procedures and FCC rules and regulations. The dispatcher will use computer software: working knowledge of NMLETS, NCIC and NMSP related software, working knowledge of Microsoft office software and adhering to departmental computer system security. The dispatcher will use CAD-Computer Aided Dispatch System; must be familiar with the operating manual as well as being able to initiate entries for all calls for services received over the radio, telephone, walk-in traffic or by any other means. Update and clear all calls appropriately. The dispatcher will use 9-1-1 and Administrative Telephone Systems: Operator must respond to administrative calls within four (4) rings, when not attending to radio traffic, and emergency 911 calls within two (2) rings. Operator must be in complete control of the conversation with all parties and exercise effective fact gathering technique. The dispatcher is expected to professionally meet the customer service standards of DPS and the State of NM, including being courteous, professional and knowledgeable of agency operation as well as knowledge of available emergency resources, law enforcement agencies and area of jurisdiction. Provide assistance and information to the general public, client agencies and officers by gathering required information to prioritize emergency and non-emergency service requests. Provides assistance and information to the general public and client agencies, by answering incoming telephone calls and assisting walk-in customers. Gathers all pertinent information required to prioritize emergency and non-emergency service requests, while keeping the officers' and the public's safety paramount. Provide accurate information, returns requested resources to the appropriate officer (s) in a timely fashion, maintains all files and accurately logs-with a working knowledge, what information is required for each file.

They will be expected to professionally meet the customer service standards of the Department of Public Safety and State of New Mexico Including being courteous, professional, and knowledgeable of agency operation as well as knowledge of available emergency resources, law enforcement and area of jurisdiction.
Who are the customers? The Non-Certified Dispatcher will work cooperatively with other operators, officers and outside resources, such as other public safety communications centers and public safety agencies. In order to fulfill the mission of providing public safety services. They must assist others, while on duty to achieve a common goal of completing tasks and job assignments in compliance with departmental goals.
Ideal Candidate Must type at least 35 words per minute with no errors. Must be able to pass a hearing test. Complete the NMDPS PST Academy within one year of hire. Must be able to pass a drug screening and background check. Minimum Qualification High School Diploma or Equivalent and one (1) year police and/or emergency dispatch experience. Substitutions Apply. Substitution Table These combinations of education and experience qualify you for the position:
Education Experience 1 High School Diploma or Equivalent AND # of months or years of experience specified in the minimum qualification 2 Associate's Degree AND Zero years of experience Education and years of experience must be related to the purpose of the position. If Minimum Qualification requires a specific number of "semester hours" in a field (e.g. 6 semester hours in Accounting), applicants MUST have those semester hours in order to meet the minimum qualifications. No substitutions apply for semester hours. Employment Requirements Employment is subject to pre-employment background investigation and random drug/alcohol testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state laws, rules and regulations; and employment is conditional, pending results. In addition, applicants must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and defensive driving certificate from the State of NM or must pass and receive the defensive driving certificate within six months of hire. This position requires the applicant to have or be able to obtain a Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification as well as, pass a typing test through NM Workforce Solutions. Minimum typing is 35 WPM
Working Conditions Work is performed in 24/7 Law enforcement office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Irregular hours, overtime, swing shifts, graveyard shifts, weekends and/or holidays shifts are required. Minimal travel may be required.
