Director of Development
Position Overview Achieve Twin Cities is seeking a dynamic, experienced director of development to join our team and play an integral role in increasing fundraising capacity in support of our significantly-expanded career and college readiness programs. In partnership with the vice president of advancement, they will co-lead growth strategies that support the development team in enhancing and expanding revenue opportunities across a variety of channels, including individual and corporate giving, sponsorships and fundraising events, with an emphasis on growing our individual giving program. As a new addition to our fundraising team, this pivotal position will also serve as a key leader in supervising and supporting development team colleagues and leading efforts to deepen internal department processes and infrastructure.
Initially, this position will primarily focus on codifying internal development processes and in time will increasingly become more externally facing. Key for success in this role are the ability to nurture valuable relationships, both internally and within our community of donors, and the ability to identify needs and explore opportunities for partnership through community engagement and philanthropic investment. Our vision is that all young people have full and equitable access to postsecondary education and career opportunities, creating a more just and vibrant community. We direct career and college readiness services in 28 Minneapolis Public Schools and Saint Paul Public Schools high schools; connect students with career exploration opportunities through Step Up high school and Achieve College Internships; host EDTalks, Principal Partner Day and other public engagement events; and serve as the nonprofit foundation for Minneapolis Public Schools.
In this work, Achieve Twin Cities partners with over 200 local companies, government agencies and nonprofits who create internship opportunities, introduce young people to new careers through school-based career exploration events, volunteer with students for mock interviews and other skill-building activities, and provide other programmatic expertise and support. Achieve also welcomes individual volunteers to share their skills and career journeys at school-based career events and mock interviews.
Duties and Responsibilities Strategy:
Serve as a member of the senior leadership team, actively participating to strategize and position the organization for the future. Co-create and assist with departmental strategic plan management and reporting, proactively tracking quarterly benchmarking, tracking metrics and outcomes. In collaboration with the vice president of advancement, develop and implement annual giving strategies for Achieve. Individual Giving:
Lead development and growth of individual giving program, including acquisition and stewardship activities, fundraising appeal processes, etc. Lead individual giving donor engagement with an assigned portfolio of funders. Analyze and evaluate data and giving trends to develop and implement individual giving program strategy. Create and present compelling proposals and materials for prospects and donors that demonstrate the impact of their gifts. Design creative fundraising campaigns to invite donors to engage with the organization in new ways. Fundraising Events and Communications:
Serve as development team lead on annual signature fundraising event to help provide development vision for theme and program, define annual event goals, ensure planning timelines, track process on activities and secure event revenue. Lead cross-team work with marketing team to plan and manage small to mid-sized donor cultivation events and other development-related events that strengthen visibility and engagement with Achieve (such as friend-raiser events, Achieve 101, Principal Partner Day, etc.) In collaboration with the development team and external engagement manager, develop and maintain relationships to build organizational visibility and financial resources, including implementing strategies to improve post-event engagement and donor cultivation. Collaborate with marketing director on the creation of development-related marketing and collateral materials, including key messaging and strategies for fundraising appeals, annual reports, donor brochures, event invitations, donor and funder profiles, eNews stories and other communications. Supervision and Development Operations:
Supervise development manager and development database specialist, including the management of respective annual work plan goals Manage and inform the creation of assigned donor portfolios and a prospect tracking system Support the development and implementation of a robust donor prospecting plan Implement and oversee development of systems and workflows that make information readily accessible to those who need it and facilitate ease of tracking and reporting. Oversee documentation and implementation of procedures and standards of practice for the development team Support the creation of fundraising reports for senior leadership team, other Achieve staff, board of directors, and board development committee Ensure that fundraising staff have access to technology and tools necessary to fulfill their responsibilities, as well as necessary training and support Effectively develop, manage and track development department expense budget. Qualifications and Experience Required:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience Minimum of 5-7 years in nonprofit development-specific roles with increasing levels of responsibility Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills and ability to work collaboratively and establish trusting relationships within multiple teams and external partners Excellent writing and communication skills Experience leading individual giving programs Demonstrated experience as a supervisor who prioritizes inclusive, collaborative teambuilding Project management skills to coordinate projects across departments or teams. Experience supporting both large and small donor cultivation and fundraising events. Experience working with board members and volunteers to connect them with engagement opportunities. Proficiency with donor software/database programs, preferably Raiser's Edge. Resourceful and flexible self-starter; possesses an entrepreneurial spirit to creatively grow resources. Strong MS Word and Excel skills and problem-solving skills Commitment to Achieve Twin Cities mission, vision and values Preferred:
Strong working knowledge of the local philanthropic landscape, particularly experience or understanding of funders in Saint Paul and East Side community Demonstrated skills as a progressively successful fundraiser Knowledge of fundraising strategy, including long-term planning with programs rooted in a theory of change Awareness of and experience in career readiness, secondary education, youth workforce development and/or engaging local Twin Cities business community. Experience working with populations similar to the young people we serve, and an open, positive attitude and commitment to youth. Compensation and Benefits $89,000 - $100,000 starting salary, depending on experience, with opportunity for compensation increases based on an annual performance review and to reflect pay parity across the organization. Full-time, exempt position. 18 paid holidays including 3 floating holidays and 8 half-day summer Fridays, 18 vacation days in year one (with increases based on length of employment), up to 10 sick days per year, and additional paid leave options for bereavement, compassionate leave, parental leave, and more. Hours are prorated for part-time employees. Other benefits include medical, health savings account option, dental, vision, life insurance and annual professional development funds. Achieve is committed to a hybrid work environment; this position is expected to work one day per week in our downtown Minneapolis office, attend monthly all staff meetings in person, and attend occasional additional in-person meetings; remaining time can be spent working remotely.
