The Director of Data Engineering plays a critical role in the enterprise Advanced Analytics organization and is responsible for creating and executing the data strategy as well as leading and mentoring a team of skilled Data Engineers. This team plays a crucial part in managing the data infrastructure, creating data assets and data products across the company, ensuring data quality and governance, while facilitating data-driven decision-making in partnership with analytics, data science team, business leaders and other internal and external stakeholders.
Key responsibilities:
Leadership and Team Management: Lead and manage a geo-distributed teams of data engineers, data architects, and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) specialists. Provide guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to team members. Foster a collaborative and high-performance work culture within the data engineering team. Take ideas and concepts, and visualize them in ways such that they are communicated effectively and compellingly for internal leaders, partners and customers Data Architecture and Infrastructure: Define and implement the data architecture and infrastructure strategy. Oversee the design and development of data pipelines, data warehouses, and data lakes. Ensure scalability, reliability, and performance of data systems. Data Quality and Governance: Establish and enforce data quality standards and data governance practices. Implement data validation and cleansing processes to maintain high-quality data. Ensure compliance with data privacy and security regulations. Data Integration and ETL: Manage the development of ETL processes to extract, transform, and load data from various sources. Integrate data from diverse systems and sources into a centralized repository. Optimize data integration workflows for efficiency and accuracy. Technology Stack Management: Evaluate and select data engineering tools and technologies. Keep up-to-date with industry trends and best practices. Manage relationships with vendors and third-party service providers (Databricks, Microsoft). Data Collaboration: Collaborate with data science and Analytics Leaders, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements. Ensure that data is accessible to those who need it for analysis and reporting. Budget and Resource Management: Develop and manage the data engineering budget. Allocate resources effectively to meet project and organizational goals. Experiences necessary for success:
Bachelor's degree in data science, mathematics, economics, statistics, engineering or information management Demonstrated experience in Data Management/Reporting/ETL Development tool sets and knowledge and hands-on experience in rolling out to an enterprise organization Demonstrated experience with various project management methodologies, including Agile methodologies and supporting techniques Experience and proficiency with various technology packages related to AI/ML and BI domains Experience building and leading a large team (including managed services – onshore and offshore) in the development and rapid delivery of platform capabilities Proven track record of recruiting and retaining strong talent. Experience in working with external vendors and developing SOW's to explore funding opportunities through those partnerships Must demonstrate an ability to establish relationships and build rapport to influence colleagues at all levels, uncover business or technical issues, and facilitate their resolution. Must be able to present information concisely and clearly to all levels of management, including financial, technical, and executive level audiences. Takes initiative to complete critical tasks in a team setting; effortlessly navigates the inter-departmental structures to achieve success. Challenges the status quo to generate new ideas, is open to challenges, and implements unique solutions; focuses on the best outcome for the company Has a comprehensive knowledge base in his or her technical field and continually augments the team's experiences and skills with the latest training, technologies, and techniques. Experience with Cloud data platforms. Azure Cloud experience a strong plus. Experience working in a portfolio company with multi-business units; preferably a manufacturing company. Experience with Microsoft Azure Knowledge of digital concepts and ways of doing things and successful track record of leveraging them to enable proactive decision making and the use of data to make better and faster decisions.
