Pay Range:
$3.00 per hour for on-call
$28.62 - $36.57 Per hour worked
POSITION SUMMARY: The Deputy Medical Examiner performs duties as outlined in Wisconsin State Statute §979, 30.67 (6), 48.981, 59.34, Chapter 69, and the Wisconsin Administrative Code as may be amended or required by law.  The Deputy Medical Examiner conducts medicolegal death investigations as prescribed by state statutes. 
JOB DESCRIPTION: *80% Death Investigation
- Pronounce, Determine cause / manner of death (accidental, homicide, natural, or suicide)
- Upon dispatch, the Deputy Medical Examiner responds to scene to pronounce and determine time and circumstances of death.
The Deputy Medical Examiner conducts the initial investigation which involves:
- Evaluate scene through photographic and written documentation.
- Record and retain statements as needed from first responders, witnesses, healthcare providers and family.
- Photograph the body & principle characteristics and identifying features such as hair color, eye color, scars, and tattoos.
- Examine body for trace evidence.
*20% Investigation follow up, phone inquiries, notifications, coordination
- Intake data from deaths that occur at medical facilities and determine Medical Examiner involvement
- Collection of medical records and history
- Confer with Physicians
- Communication with next of kin throughout death investigation
- Coordinate transports to/from scene, to/from Morgue and to/from Forensic Pathologist office
- Correspond with Milwaukee Medical Examiner Office
- Authorize Harvesting via Donor Network
- Supply toxicology and autopsy reports to District Attorney and/or law enforcement agencies
- Testify in civil and criminal court cases when necessary
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works independently and reports to the Medical Examiner.

Education Requirements : (Include certificates, licenses and/or registrations required.)
A minimum of two years of post-high school education in nursing, medical technology, chemistry, biology, medicine, pre-med, paramedic, EMT, forensic science, criminal justice or closely related field.
Experience Requirements: One year of medicolegal investigative experience preferred.
A combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Other Requirements: Must have a valid Wisconsin Driver's License.
Must successfully pass criminal background check and preemployment physical and drug screening.
Availability to work 24 hour on-call shifts.
Physical Requirements: This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, frequently requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms. Work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the statutory duties affecting the Medical Examiner's Office, methods of conducting death investigations, and supervisory techniques. Ability to establish and maintain effective public relations and working relationships with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Ability to exercise judgment and make independent decisions to oversee the work of staff, communicate effectively orally and in writing and interact effectively with co-workers and the general public.

Work requires operating motor vehicles.  This may involve driving in inclement weather conditions. Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Work may require working in dangerous situations. Work requires wearing specialized personal protective equipment. May be subject to exposure to blood/body fluids and infectious and communicable diseases in various environments.
