Description of Job The Colorado Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP) will be hosting a 2-year post-master's fellowship for a Cultural Resource Support Specialist. The position is intended for junior and early career professionals to build their CV/Resume and prepare for an exciting career in government cultural resource management by training in a range of duties across the Colorado State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).


The primary duties include, but are not limited to, review of new and legacy cultural site and survey information for data accuracy and incorporation into the OAHP relational and Geographic Information System (GIS) databases, as well as consultation pursuant to the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the Colorado State Register Act (SRA), and Colorado Historical, Prehistoric, and Archaeological Resources Act. This position provides primary support to the OAHP's Information Management Unit with additional support, as needed, for the Intergovernmental Services Unit, Preservation Planning Unit, or providing technical assistance for the Office of the State Archaeologist of Colorado.



Data Management Builds skills to effectively identify and rectify conflicting data using archaeological, historic preservation, established unit guidelines, and/or GIS knowledge. Makes corrections to data entered into the two office-wide databases at the suggestion of the Cultural Resource and GIS database managers. Organizes and prepares documents for scanning; using hardware and software, scans rectified cultural resource forms and documents to meet OAHP standards, as well as to the requirements of recent State Accessibility legislation (HB 21-1110). Evaluates forms and documents to determine which material is protected by copyright law and cannot be scanned and uploaded to the online database. Compliance and Review Builds skill over the fellowship in order to ultimately review compliance projects independently and provide technical comments and assistance in writing within legally prescribed time limits to federal and state agencies pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and the Colorado State Register Act, and the Colorado Historical, Prehistoric, and Archaeological Resources Act. Researches and interprets federal and state laws and regulations in its program areas. Reviews and provides comments regarding compliance work completed by other Intergovernmental Services Unit staff upon request. Technical Assistance and Production Performance Builds skills and relationships with History Colorado staff in other departments and participates in opportunities for collaboration to advance the different program goals and needs to better serve the people of Colorado. Builds skills in developing and coordinating guidelines and regulations between other units within OAHP, including the Information Management unit, Intergovernmental Services unit, Preservation Planning unit, and the Office of the State Archaeologist, as needed and at the request and/or guidance of their direct supervisor. Builds skills to effectively communicate with federal, state, local agencies, and/or contractors, under the direction of their direct supervisor, in order to obtain supplementary information needed to resolve any technical or data issues. Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights A successful candidate will possess Master's degree in anthropology, archaeology, or closely related field as well as additional experience as described by the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines (36 CFR Part 61), which includes: The ideal candidate has finished master's level course work or has finished/is finishing their Master of the Arts degree in Anthropology within the last year. Minimum qualifications are a Bachelor's of the Art's degree in Anthropology and two years of direct experience including but not limited to employment with a Cultural Resource Management (CRM) company, museum, or non-profit. Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.

Must have: Ability to use computer hardware, networks, and associated peripherals, Exceptional writing skills, attention to detail and concern for accuracy, strong interpersonal and team building abilities, effective problem solving, and successful negotiation skills.
