SUMMARY: America's Poison Centers represent the nation's 55 Poison Centers. We have established partnerships with federal agencies (e.g., FDA, CDC), non-profits, and private industry supporting national surveillance, public health initiatives, and poisoning prevention and education campaigns. America's Poison Centers also maintains the nation's only near real-time poisoning data surveillance system (National Poison Data System©, integrating the latest information from across our Poison Center network. Poison Centers handle more than 2 million cases annually and are on the front lines of responding to emerging public health threats, such as opioids and COVID-19.
The Communications Specialist will report to the Director of Communications & Public Education and play an integral role in raising brand awareness and visibility of America's Poison Centers, their mission, and the work of the poison centers across the country. This position is an exciting opportunity to gain experience in all facets of marketing and communications with a tangible opportunity for career advancement as the organization continues its national growth and to expand and foster new public health initiatives. We are looking for a collaborative, highly organized, proactive professional with experience in health communications and health education. The Communications Specialist will support public education campaigns and initiatives, draft and edit content, support a national media relations strategy, and grow our online and social media presence. You will also join a group of highly skilled professionals focused on advancing public health via a collaborative and supportive work environment.
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Write and edit content to ensure it adheres to America's Poison Centers' brand and writing guidelines, follows plain language standards, and health communication best practices. This includes drafting internal and external newsletters, web content for PoisonCenters.org and PoisonHelp.org, social media, and print content. Develop and execute strategies to support and expand America's Poison Centers' social media presence, including drafting, posting and scheduling social content, and responding to comments and messages. Assist in the planning and execution of strategies that promote poisoning prevention and education campaigns, including National Poison Prevention Week. Assist in executing a national media relations strategy, respond to media inquiries, and draft and disseminate press releases, advisories, media pitches, talking points, and other press materials. Work in collaboration with the Director of Communications & Public Education to support all partnership development and stakeholder management activities, including management of the Public Education Committee, which is a committee of Health Educators representing all poison centers. Assist the Director of Communications & Public Education with managing vendors who are responsible for key communications and education activities. Collaborate cross-departmentally and support the America's Poison Centers Chief Executive Officer with other duties as assigned, as the organization continues to grow. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree required. A minimum of 3-5 years relevant experience is preferred. Although not required, special consideration for candidates with experience working for nonprofit associations or public health organizations. Relevant education and/or internships may be substituted for experience. Exceptional writing and editing skills, including the ability to write for diverse audiences and a variety of communication mediums. Experience utilizing and engaging with an organization's social media community through social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Experience with media tools, such as Cision and PR Newswire. Ability to manage multiple projects effectively, as well as manage and meet deadlines The successful candidate will have an eye for detail, a positive, team-oriented attitude, and a proactive, resourceful approach to the workplace. Must be a fluent user of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc. Experience with Adobe, HTML, WordPress, or CMS is preferred.
