Job DescriptionThe School of Visual Arts (SOVA) at Virginia Tech (https://www.sova.vt.edu) invites applications for a full-time, academic-year (9-month) Collegiate Assistant Professor position in Foundations, with a start date of August, 2024. SOVA's Foundations program is open to all Virginia Tech students as well as BFA majors in Studio Art, Graphic Design and Creative Technologies. The ideal hire will be qualified to teach all Foundations classes (regardless of area of expertise) including Principles of Drawing, Principles of 2D Art and Design, Principles of 3D Art and Design, Principles of 4D Art and Design, Contemporary Art & Practice, as well as Professional Studio Practices.Collegiate faculty members have primary duties in curriculum development and instruction at all levels as needed, undergraduate research supervision, GTA supervision, and related scholarly activity. This initial three-year appointment is eligible for indefinite multi-year renewals upon successful review and for promotions to Collegiate Associate Professor and Collegiate Professor. The successful candidate will make significant contributions to the instruction of current Foundations courses, as well as incorporate curriculum enhancements and innovative pedagogy.The ideal candidate will demonstrate a particular commitment to the foundational instruction of first year students and non-majors with an interest in program leadership. Continued development of professional capabilities and participation in impactful creative research activities is expected. SOVA consists of a community of artists whose creative practice has an impact locally, regionally, nationally and/or internationally. The ideal candidate will become a part of this cohort and model active creative practice for our students. The ideal candidate will also participate in school, college, and university service and governance and professional service.SOVA is housed within the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design (AAD) at Virginia Tech, a comprehensive land grant research university in Blacksburg, Virginia. SOVA has approximately 275 undergraduate majors within four areas (Graphic Design, Creative Technologies, Studio Art, and Art History). The Foundations Program contributes primarily to SOVA majors, but also serves non-majors. A graduate program in Creative Technologies contributes to the Foundations Program with GTAs when needed.Duties and responsibilities of the position include:? Teach three courses per semester. Primary teaching duties will be within SOVA's undergraduate Foundations program, however, depending on programmatic needs in area of expertise, opportunities to teach upper-level classes and/or classes for non-majors will arise on occasion.? Contribute to the health of SOVA's Foundations program by participating in initiatives such as curriculum development, enrollment management, assessment, etc.? Maintain an up-to-date proficiency with digital and analog tools as they relate to the teaching of foundational visual art and design classes? Stay abreast of cutting-edge Foundations educational practices, theories, and ethics? Contribute to an environment inclusive of a diverse range of first-year students at all levels of proficiency in visual arts and design? Work as part of a team with other faculty and staff to maintain Foundations studios and model best practices for maintaining safe and productive work spaces? Contribute to student mentoring beyond Foundations including mentorship of undergraduate and graduate capstone projects in area of specialization, as well as graduate students who are teaching Foundations courses? Contribute to school, college, and university-level service and outreach? Maintain an active creative research practice? Terminal degree (MFA, MDes, etc.) in a visual arts discipline by appointment start date? Prior teaching experience in an undergraduate art or design program? Ability to integrate digital tools, including Adobe Creative Suite and emerging technologies, into a Foundations curriculum that primarily serves students majoring in Studio Art, Graphic Design, and Creative Technologies, alongside non-majors?
