Summary of Primary Function The Trauma Coder, working under the direct supervision of the Trauma Registry Coordinator is responsible for the overall collection and retention of pertinent data concerning trauma patients. He/she ensures that complete and accurate data is collected for trauma patients including validation of patient data for the American College of Surgeons, National Trauma Data Bank, and Trauma Service Program. He/she supports the delivery of quality health care service and appropriate Injury Severity Scoring (ISS) and Probability of Survival (PS) by assigning codes to diagnoses, co-morbidities, operative and non-invasive procedures according to Tenth Revision of International Classification of Disease ICD-10 CM and Abbreviated Injury Scale Coding (AIS) in order to define severity by the post-dot score and mortality. Generating monthly reports; maintaining daily trauma census, collecting data from the Coroner's office data according to HB138, assisting with the American College of Surgeon Verification review. He/she assists the Trauma Registry Coordinator with focus studies and research projects promoting favorable guest relations and expressing the values of the hospital philosophy in daily work activities.
Essential Job Functions 1. Compiles pertinent data for the trauma registry. Identifies appropriate patients, including readmissions resulting from traumatic injury, for entry into the trauma registry.
2. Abstracts core data, involving all phases of trauma care, from the electronic medical record according to established guidelines. Identifies all injuries assigns ICD-10 CM and Abbreviated Injury Scale, coding to the highest level of specificity. Utilizing the Trauma Registry Coordinator, Trauma Coordinator, Trauma PI Coordinator as consultants for interpretation of material when needed.
3. Interacts with all areas of the institution and other areas, e.g. EMS companies, Coroner's office, to ensure accurate data collection.
4. Accurately enters data into the trauma registry via computer, under the guidance of the Trauma Registry Coordinator
5. Assists with monitoring of Performance Improvement indicators
6. Organizes and generates monthly reports for review Trauma Registry Coordinator
7. Produces and distributes accurate daily trauma census
8. Assist the Trauma Registry Coordinator, on a need be basis

Employment Qualifications Required Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Education: Vocational/ Technical Degree
Required Medical Terminology and anatomy.
Licensing/ Certification - If registration, certification or licensure is required, include the name of the accrediting or licensing body.
Licensure/Certification Required: Trauma Registry Course within two years with certification
Licensure/Certification Preferred: Completion of Abbreviated Injury Scale within two years with certificate Completion of ICD-10 or ICD-10 refresher course every 5 years with certificate.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum Years and Type of Experience: 2 years of job-related experience (preferred)
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Proficient in MS Office and Zoom Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Experience in Epic/Electronic Medical Records, Medical Terminology and anatomy (required)
Combination of post-secondary education and experience in lieu of a degree. Working Conditions This section addresses the physical environment in which the employee will perform the work.
