The NC State Equine hospital provides state of the art, continuous care for elective, urgent (same day), and emergent cases, as well outpatients, through the hospital-based Equine Internal Medicine, Equine Soft Tissue Surgery, Equine Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Equine Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Cardiology, and Equine Emergency services.
The Equine Internal Medicine Service is overseen by specialists with board certification in Large Animal Internal Medicine. The service has a busy and varied caseload consisting primarily of horses with colic, respiratory disease, colitis, neurologic disease, cardiac disease, and neonatal foal diseases. The service is supported by one clinical technician and three residents, in addition to rotating interns and house officers from other services. Essential Job Duties: Clinical duties : Major clinical responsibilities include providing high end specialized internal medicine and critical care, supporting the equine internal medicine service, providing excellent service to referring veterinarians and clients, and providing outstanding house officer support. Emergency backup on-call duty may be expected during clinical rotations, with holiday coverage shared evenly among clinicians on the medicine service. The emergency service covers the majority of primary emergency duty, but clinicians may be on call to assist with specific types of cases and for hospitalized patients. The person in this position would also be expected to provide consultations for in-house services and referring veterinarians and to develop a collegial relationship with other services within the hospital and with the local referring veterinarian population. Teaching : The person in this position would be expected to teach fourth year veterinary students and house officers in the clinical setting, which may include active learning on cases, small group rounds discussions. This person would attend and contribute to student rounds preparation and participate in regular medicine service faculty meetings. University/Community Outreach : The person in this position would be expected to develop positive relationships with veterinarians in the field to encourage growth of the service and caseload.
The person in this position will be expected to perform clinical duties as described for 39 weeks per year. While performing these duties, the candidate's primary responsibility will be managing hospitalized patients, seeing outpatients, taking referrals, providing consults, and receiving emergencies during the hours that the service is functioning. Minimum Education and Experience: DVM (or equivalent degree) and eligibility for veterinary licensure (or faculty licensure) in the State of NC.
