This job assumes responsibility for managing all facets of the Society for Thoracic Surgeons (STS) database which is a nationally validated, risk-adjusted, outcomes-based program to measure and improve the quality of surgical care; and assumes chief responsibility to collect and submit reliable data to the STS. This is accomplished through high quality data compilation, documentation and entry into the STS database of all eligible surgeries in the hospital. Works closely with Departments to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects as may be identified.
Education Required – Associate's degree in Nursing
Preferred – Bachelor's degree in Nursing
Work Experience Required – 5 years Perioperative experience including one year experience in hospital surgery department, surgery clinic, clinical research or medical records.
Certifications Required – Current RN License in the state of practice
Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs) Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
Skills to articulate questions to receive an appropriate level of support from superiors and peers.
Quality improvement or patient safety knowledge and experience.
Job Duties Identifies surgical patients for inclusion in the Program through the application of Program inclusion/exclusion criteria and protocols.
Collects preoperative, operative, and postoperative data components for the Program through the effective utilization of the hospital medical record systems.
Responsible for the accurate and timely entry of data into the program's database and meets the caseload accrual requirement protocol.
Serves as an educational resource on the STS for internal and external audiences by developing educational material and delivering presentations.
Exhibits responsibility for professional development and maintaining required clinical knowledge, technical skills, training and credentials.
Establishes effective working relationships with members of the hospital community, especially staff in the Specialty Clinics, Medicine, Nursing, Medical Records, and Information Systems Departments whose support is necessary for the management and success of the Program.
Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.

The risk level of exposure may increase depending on the essential job duties of the role.
