About MSF-USA | Doctors Without Borders Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international humanitarian organization providing medical care to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from health care in over 70 countries. We were formed in France in 1971 as an association by a group of doctors and journalists to go to emergency situations and to treat patients with dignity while bearing witness independently of geopolitical boundaries. MSF is now a global movement of more than 25 MSF organizations, working in over 70 countries. Department The Executive Department heads the office Management Team, and works in conjunction with the Board of Directors, to guarantee the overall functioning of MSF-USA and MSF-USA's involvement in the larger MSF movement.
Role Overview The MSF USA Strategic Plan for ******** highlights the importance of addressing climate change and reducing carbon emissions. The organization has pledged to reduce its carbon emissions by 50% from 2019 levels before 2030. To accomplish this objective, MSF-USA has created a Roadmap to Carbon Reduction and has been publishing an annual carbon footprint report since 2019. To support analysis and research efforts needed to achieve this goal, MSF-USA is looking for a Climate Sustainability Intern. The position will report to the Board and Executive Liaison Officer and interface with staff from the Executive department and other departments as needed.
Department Accountabilities Leadership and Direction Inspire and guide others, communicating actions needed and how they relate to broader organizational mission and strategy. 
Stakeholder Management Identify and engage with key internal and/or external stakeholders to create positive working relationships that enable the initiation, delivery, and implementation of a program or project. 
Advance Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Support and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion (D, E, and I) by providing an example, advice and guidance on D, E, and I, to internal and external stakeholders to enable them to adopt these principles in ways that will also enhance innovation and other performance measures. Represent the organization to external stakeholders on D, E, and I issues.  
Operations Management Execute and manage operations using predetermined protocols and procedures to achieve specified operational performance standards.  
Organizational Capability Building Take action to develop capabilities at an organizational level to ensure that these are relevant to current and future organizational requirements and to enable the organization at large to achieve MSF-USA goals and fulfill the potential of its people.  
Roles Specific Outcomes Research and Analysis Contribute to the writing and collection of data for MSF-USA's annual carbon footprint report. Assist in benchmarking and analyzing annual carbon emissions using data visualization. Support the review and revision of the MSF-USA Roadmap to Carbon Reduction.
Contribute to developing recommendations and guidance for reducing carbon emissions and/or carbon offsetting initiatives. These recommendations will be considered by the Executive and management team.
Knowledge Management Keep up to date with relevant activities and initiatives across the MSF movement and other INGOs. Maintain and update repository (SharePoint) for knowledge sharing across the MSF USA office.

Desired Qualifications & Experience Currently enrolled in a graduate/advanced degree or similar program in the environment, climate change, or a related discipline is preferred. Recent graduates or undergraduates with relevant experience will also be considered. Excellent proofreading, writing and research skills. A working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Keen attention to detail and comfortable with reviewing carbon emissions data. A genuine commitment to MSF's humanitarian principles and strong interest in climate and environmental issues, especially pertaining to the international humanitarian and aid sector. Travel Requirements No travel is required for this position.
Compensation $17.00 per hour
We do not accept phone calls or emails during the recruitment process. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Our staff works a hybrid schedule with the ability to come into either the NYC office or regional hub (Washington, DC or Bay Area, California) a minimum of 2 times a week. The required days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from January to June and September to December. 
In office work attendance during July and August is optional.
