The hiring process begins by completing an application for employment with the City of San Angelo.  Applicants must complete the following steps as part of the hiring process:   Written Civil Service Exam (applicants must pass with a score of at least 70% to proceed to the next step)Physical Agility Test  (see Recruiting-Testing Dates for more information)Detailed Personal History StatementBackground Investigation to include Polygraph ExaminationOral Interview BoardPsychological ExaminationMedical ExaminationCandidates are selected from a field of applicants that have passed a written civil service exam, physical agility test, a thorough background investigation, and an intense oral interview.  Successful applicants will be hired as a police recruit and attend a rigorous and demanding six-month basic peace officer course held at the Tom Flowers Law Enforcement Training Center.  After graduating from the academy and passing a state certification exam, trainees will become probationary police officers. 
Probationary Police Officers will then attend additional in-service training of a period of time that is dependent on departmental needs and an eighteen -week Field Training Program before being assigned to one of six patrol shifts. 
Specialized Assignments/Units:

Officers are eligible to apply for openings in specialized units after completing two years of service with the department
