Organizational Overview
The University Consortium of Schools is comprised of three schools (Infant - grade 12) operated by UCLA: UCLA Early Care and Education (ECE), the UCLA Lab School, and the Geffen Academy; The University Consortium of Schools is also deeply engaged with two UCLA and LAUSD affiliated community schools that are operated by LAUSD: Robert F. Kennedy UCLA Community School (grades PreK-12) and the Horace Mann UCLA Community School (grades 6-12). As each school is unique, the University Consortium of Schools are housed in the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies (Ed&IS) and are united under one mission of providing academic excellence, teaching, research, public service, and innovation to our communities to foster intellectual inquiry and creativity in an environment dedicated to equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice.
UCLA's School of Education and Information Studies (Ed&IS) is a national leader in the study and practice of education and information studies. Ed&IS is preeminent in the areas of equity, access, and social justice; K-12 and higher education; and library, archival and information studies. It is our mission to make a difference in the education and information fields through both scholarship and professional practice to enhance the life experience of all individuals through inquiry, professional practice, and policy that lead to equitable access to quality education and useful information. Position Overview
The Associate Dean for University Partnership Schools is responsible for the oversight and management of the three University Consortium of Schools (Geffen Academy, Lab School, and Early Care Education) as well as maintaining the research connection and relationship with the two UCLA LAUSD Community Schools (Mann UCLA Community School and RFK UCLA Community School) and University programs related to preK-12 Education. The Associate Dean will directly supervise and manage performance of the heads of school for each of the three on site UCLA University Consortium of Schools, the Chief Operations Officer/Associate Dean of Administration for the UCLA Consortium of Schools, the Assistant Dean for Academic Engagement, and the Executive Director for University and Community preK-12 Programs. The Associate Dean will engage in high level administrative oversight of each school in their academic and operational needs of an approximate operating budget of $60 million. The Associate Dean will also oversee and coordinate enrollment efforts at the schools in partnership with the heads of schools. The Associate Dean will also serve as the connection between the UCLA University Consortium of Schools and the School of Education and Information Studies and the broader UCLA campus to encourage and incorporate research, service, and teaching opportunities into the sites to find alignments to the mission and vision of the School of Ed&IS and UCLA. The Associate Dean will report directly to the Ed&IS Wasserman Dean.
The Associate Dean for University Partnership Schools will also oversee the activity at the Mann UCLA and RFK UCLA Community Schools partnerships which includes: raising funding to programs for students, teachers and leaders; serving as UCLA's representative on the two school's governance councils as well as through the engagement with the Center for Community Schooling housed in the School of Ed&IS. The Center for Community Schooling engages in research and program development to reimagine schooling as a public good that prepares all students to succeed in college, careers, and civic life. The Associate Dean will meet periodically with the principals of the UCLA Community Schools and form strategic initiatives to strengthen research and collaboration between the Community Schools and UCLA. The Associate Dean will also oversee the University pre K - 12 programs housed under Ed&IS including; Community Programs, TIE-INS, Geffen Network of Schools, and California Math Project.
General Responsibilities
Develop strategic direction for curriculum that serves the mission of each individual school.
Stay abreast of infant-grade 12 educational innovation and advancements across the global educational societies to bring new ideas and learning initiatives to the UCLA University Consortium of Schools.
Serve as the delegated dean authority for all academic and staff positions within the infant-grade 12 schools as it pertains to performance, salary actions, promotional reviews, appointments, etc.
Seek opportunities to advance the mission and vision of the University Consortium of Schools and strengthen the connection with communities.
Establish and facilitate coordinated review and updates of program standards across all schools, providing a consistent and unified approach to infant -grade 12 education which reflects UCLA's overarching mission while allowing individual sites of learning to maintain and build upon their unique histories and identities.
Provide supervision and support to heads of schools and coordinate policies to include processes for conflict resolution and potential termination of noncompliant families, faculty and staff.
Compose and manage performance evaluations for all direct reports.
Provide consultation to the heads of schools in the development of policies, practices, and quality programs across all sites of learning to ensure inclusivity for all student support needs, and ensure compliance with state and federal laws and mandates.
Monitor and advise Ed&IS and campus leadership on relations between UCLA and state, other governmental, and regulatory agencies, including but not limited to Community Care Licensing, California Department of Education Child Development Division, LAUP, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), regarding child care licensing and regulatory matters.
Work closely with heads of schools to ensure enrollment goals are met and ensure adequate timelines and deadlines related to enrollment deposits are aligned with neighboring schools.
Periodically review tuition rates to ensure fiscal health of the schools. Engage in thoughtful dialogue with heads of schools regarding tuition rates and enrollment goals. Make reasonable recommendations to the Dean and Provost regarding proposed tuition rate changes when necessary.
Research
Act as a liaison between the University Consortium of Schools, UCLA Community Schools, and the School of Ed&IS to foster collaborative learning, service and research opportunities at the various sites of learning.
Provide coordination and strategic action in fundraising, grant prospects, and research opportunities for individual programs for infant-grade 12 programs as a whole.
Collaborate with the Ed&IS Office of Public Engagement, Education and Information Studies Departments, and Professional Programs to design and implement research initiatives and cross-collaborative learning environments at the University Consortium of School's sites of learning as well at the University sites of learning.
Strengthen research and program development relationships with the UCLA Community Schools.
Seek research opportunities and collaborations with UCLA faculty in infant-grade 12 educational spaces that strengthen the mission and vision of the various schools within the University Consortium of Schools.
Ensure research carried out at the infant-grade 12 sites of learning aligns with and facilitates the robust learning of the students and the safety of students, faculty and staff is made the first priority.
Serve as Principal Investigator on research programs and proposals that serve the mission and vision of the University Consortium of Schools as needed.
Operations
Oversee all academic and administrative operations at the three infant-grade 12schools (ECE, Lab School, Geffen Academy). Consult regularly with academic deans and campus administrators with academic linkages to the infant-grade 12 schools to facilitate collaboration with academic, service and research activities.
In collaboration with the Chief Operations Officer, oversee shared resource utilization across the schools as appropriate to meet the distinct individual missions of the schools.
Ensure effective utilization of human resources and academic personnel with appropriate application of University policies and labor contracts to ensure compliance with system-wide and campus policies and procedures, federal and state laws and regulations, and collective bargaining agreements.
Mentor and counsel unit directors on performance, staff engagement, emerging academic issues, and program developments.
Meet regularly with the three heads of schools at ECE, Lab School, and Geffen Academy respectively to ensure operational and financial success of each infant-grade 12 school. Work with the heads of schools in designing strategic direction that aligns with the school's mission and vision as well as the mission and vision of the School of Ed&IS.
Meet periodically with the leadership of the two community schools to ensure success of the partnerships with UCLA.
Serve on the School Governing Councils for the two Community Schools.
Implement unified standards and practices, in partnership with appropriate campus and community departments and services, to ensure the physical safety of employees and students in all sites of learning.
Oversee coordinated compliance with all matters related to environmental health at all sites of learning.
Review and audit individual school budgets to evaluate allocation of campus-based fiscal resources to support specific programs or services that enhance the school or overall programmatic goals.
Facilitate provision of legal advice and appropriate management of risks for the infant-grade 12 schools.
Oversee collective bargaining agreements and labor contracts of unionized employees within the infant-grade 12 schools. Participate in labor negotiations as they pertain to infant-grade 12 educators to ensure operational needs are met for the schools.
Development and Communications
Work with the UCLA Development, Ed&IS Development, and Development officers for the Consortium of Schools and heads of schools to facilitate philanthropic programs.
Establish new and assist in maintaining existing partnerships with external donors and benefactors to support creative development of new program efforts.
Represent overall program at local and national conferences and meetings to promote the overall UCLA brand and bring attention to innovative developments from individual units.
Lead communication for school administration, families, and greater community on high level communication efforts regarding but not limited to: operational practices, admission policies, safety and wellness, emergency responses, etc.
Ensure consistency in addressing parent needs and coordination of procedures and practices across the schools, in support of meeting the University's standards and complying with policies.
Qualifications: As a normal requirement, the appointee should have a terminal or top degree in the appointee's field e.g., Ph.D., Ed.D., M.D., D.D.S., D.V.M., J.D., or the highest degree that is commonly expected for appointment in the activity.
10 years of experience in educational leadership in early childhood--grade 12 or higher education, or equivalent combination of education and experience, demonstrating strong skills in leadership, communication, collaboration, and a commitment to inclusiveness and diversity.
Demonstrated knowledge of early childhood--grade 12 educational regulations.
Demonstrated experience with organizations related to early care, primary, and secondary educational certification and licensing.
Demonstrated experience leading a multi-grade educational organization.
Experience working in leadership within community school environments.
Refined understanding of child development in educational settings
Preferred Demonstrated commitment to educational practices, grounded in empirical research, academic rigor, intellectual curiosity, and development and fostering of social and relational skills among students.
Understanding of the educational landscape in Los Angeles.
Excellent leadership and facilitation skills with emphasis on collaboration and the ability to maintain and establish working relationships with individuals at all levels. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
