Biomedical Informatics

Job Summary:

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is the world leader in clinical informatics research and practice, conducting ground-breaking and innovative research.

The Vanderbilt Clinical Informatics Center (VCLIC) leads these efforts at VUMC, with a focus on making electronic health record (EHRs) safer, smarter, and more effective by using cutting edge software design and artificial intelligence approaches to learn from the vast amount of data collected in EHRs, among other methods. We are seeking an associate application developer to develop support our research and operational initiatives. VCLIC coordinates clinical informatics activities across Vanderbilt University Medical Center and is working to "pave the road" for clinical informatics researchers and practitioners, ensuring that faculty, students, and staff throughout Vanderbilt find it easy to access data, test innovations, and evaluate results. VCLIC also offers lectures, trainings, competitions, and funding opportunities for Vanderbilt clinical informaticians.

The associate application developer will conduct full-stack development for both prototype and production applications. The developer will be a key participant in the research team, helping with design, architecture and development of software applications, under supervision of the center director.

Candidates for the associate application developer role will have an interest in healthcare and technology, and a strong desire to be part of a thriving team and Center that is working to bring high quality research and service to the Vanderbilt community.

Because of the diversity of our projects and the relatively small size of our team, the Associate Application Developer will be able to take ownership of the technology stack and program using a range of different technologies and approaches including SQL, various back-end technologies and front-end technologies and frameworks (especially for web programming) such as Angular, Laravel, Express, React or Next.js. The software the candidate develops will be used to improve patient care and advance research at VUMC, and the developer will collaborate directly with clinicians, research and health system leaders.

Through the VUMC Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) and the Vanderbilt Clinical Informatics Center (VCLIC), the associate application developer will have numerous opportunities for training and career development, including direct exposure to research and clinical care. DBMI and VCLIC, along with clinical partners, hold regular seminars and journal clubs and offer trainings on clinical informatics skills, research skills, data management, machine learning, and clinical medicine, among other topics.
