Job Description Summary
The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering (CEGE) at Michigan Technological University invites applications for an instructional track faculty position in transportation at the assistant teaching professor level. Applicants with the required education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and accomplishments commensurate with a higher rank will also be considered for an appointment at the rank of associate teaching professor, teaching professor, or professor of practice. The successful candidate should be able to teach a variety of transportation and transportation engineering/design classes beginning in August 2024.  The candidate may be expected to teach some other courses across CEGE curriculum as well.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
Teach undergraduate core courses in various transportation and transportation engineering/design topics, as well as help supervise senior design projects and assist in curriculum assessment and development. A typical teaching load is three courses per semester. The specific courses will depend on the transportation program needs and the selected individual's background. Participation in transportation related research activities is encouraged.
Must be willing and able to contribute to Department, University, and external professional service activities, integrate safety practices into daily activities, and apply continuous improvement strategies to everyday work.
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)
A university degree (B.S., M.S., or Ph.D.) in civil engineering, transportation engineering, or a closely related field. Applicants with only a B.S. degree would be required to have considerable work experience in the transportation field or a Professional Engineering license.
Required Experience (minimum requirements)
Teaching or training experience in academia or industry.
Desirable Education and/or Experience
MS or PhD in civil engineering, transportation engineering, or closely related discipline.
Professional Engineering license.
Teaching experience in transportation-related engineering courses including, but not limited to transportation engineering, traffic engineering, transportation planning, geometric design, senior design, railroad engineering, public transportation, airport planning and design, and transportation safety.
Skills and experience in computer-aided design (CAD), road/rail traffic simulation, and/or transportation planning software.
An interest and ability to conduct research.

Ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate level
Strong interpersonal skills
Strong written and oral and presentation skills

Proficiency in CAD
A passion for teaching
A strong interest in undergraduate education
Versatility and experience in teaching foundational as well as more advanced undergraduate courses on transportation engineering
Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging, and fostering a fair, objective, welcoming place to work for persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints.

The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering currently has 26 faculty members, 540 undergraduate students, and 110 graduate students. Externally-funded research is approximately $2.5M, and the Department is on a trajectory to double its graduate
enrollment over the next five years. The CEGE Department has many teaching and research labs with state-of-the-art facilities, as well as connections with industry, which provide instrumentation to support student education and research.
