The Division of Arts and Humanities at Columbia College invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor of Studio Art that will begin August 15, 2024. The successful candidate will have an MFA by the time of appointment and will be able to teach courses in Painting, Drawing, and 2D/3D Foundations. The ability to teach in other studio areas is a plus. We seek candidates who will inspire through teaching, leadership, and research, and who will build collaborative relationships in the college as well as the profession. The Studio Art Program at Columbia College focuses on cultivating the technical abilities, aesthetic judgment, conceptual rigor, and love of making that will sustain rewarding art and design practices over the long term. Majors earn a Bachelor of Arts degree within a broad liberal arts context. The program also serves many non-majors, who have the option of minoring in either Studio Art or Art History. Facilities include a darkroom, a newly refurbished computer lab aimed at providing access to industry-standard software and technology, and studios for painting, drawing, ceramics, and printmaking. In addition, the R. Wright Spears Center for the Arts is home to the Goodall Gallery, which features student work as well as regional, national, and international artists.
This position is a nine-month, full-time, tenure track appointment. The standard teaching load is twelve credit hours for each of the fall and spring semesters. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to design and deliver courses in a variety of formats, including online and hybrid modalities, and is expected to teach both core courses and specialized courses in areas of art. Faculty are expected to have flexibility in class scheduling so as to meet the needs of the college. Faculty members are expected to participate in faculty governance and academic program activities, and to engage in service as well as scholarship and professional development.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications Candidates must hold an MFA by the start of their appointment. Experience teaching studio art courses at the college level. Other Qualifications of Interest Candidates should have at least three years of teaching experience. The ability to teach in multiple studio areas is highly valued. A portfolio containing 20 images of personal work. A portfolio containing 20 images of student work. A PDF containing links to online portfolios for the above two categories is also acceptable.
