Assistant Director of Nationally Competitive and Experiential Learning Scholarships Department: University College - 202000 Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree Evidence of scholarly accomplishments and strong writing skills Relevant experience in an academic setting: examples could include: teaching, fellowship advising, academic advising, student advising, and mentoring students in a scholarly program (honors, writing center, service learning, undergraduate research). High level of organizational skills and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with a wide range of constituents from diverse backgrounds and academic areas Ability to maintain confidentiality A demonstrated understanding of diversity and responsibility to maintain an inclusive institutional environment as it relates to the position and the success of the students we serve License/Certification Required
None Preferred Qualifications Prior experience advising students on national fellowships and awards Postgraduate experience working, studying, teaching, or conducting research abroad through a nationally competitive award. Can be substituted for one year of professional experience Expertise in program development for high-achieving students Experience maintaining records and performing assessments Prior experience serving on national selection committees for awards such as Gilman, CLS, Fulbright, Boren Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The primary purpose of this position is to work with the Nationally Competitive Scholarships Director to lead a campus-wide effort to support Appalachian State University students and recent alumni in their pursuit of distinguished external scholarships and fellowships.
This involves administering a portfolio of national fellowships: implementing recruitment strategies to reach student populations, intensive advising, application feedback, and administering internal endorsement, nomination, or evaluation procedures. This position will substantially contribute to the strategic direction of this office, through ongoing and annual assessment activities and the development of subsequent initiatives, planning documents, and strategic partnerships.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities include:
• Develop and promote a culture of early identification of potential applicants• Ability to mentor and educate in small groups and one-on-one settings with undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent alumni• Hold information sessions, workshops, and receptions on scholarship opportunities• Develop outreach materials• Monitor regulations governing scholarship and fellowship programs, including deadlines and application materials• Implement best practices in advising for students pursuing awards• Serve on national review selection panels for Gilman and Critical Language Scholarships
Application process coordination and oversight: • Manage institutional selection processes and establish processes for new awards• Convene faculty committees to review nominations for institutionally endorsed awards and provide feedback to applicants• Implement student conduct review protocol for all applications requiring institutional endorsement• Draft or write nomination/endorsement letters• Organize mock interviews for fellowship interviews
University Partnerships: • Work with university partners to enhance the publicity of fellowship and scholarship opportunities, including drafting messaging and communications• Expand faculty engagement in the scholarship and fellowship processes• Participate in campus committees, student programs, and orientations, class visits, and related events (Open House, New Faculty Orientation, Global Symposium Planning Committee) to promote programs and services• In partnership with the Office of International Programs and other university stakeholders, contribute to the Fulbright Week planning committee and provide programming/student advising during the event• Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with units across campus• Work with the Director to facilitate NCS Advisory Board meetings throughout the year
Administrative/Assessment/Tracking: • Gather and review quantitative and qualitative data to assess program effectiveness and strategize for future programming• Maintain a dynamic campus communications protocol, including effective communication of selection results to the University community• Manage the NCS student database, track advising notes, student award interest, referrals, and other information• Manage website, advising schedules, outreach materials, and event logistics• Maintain institutional records of applicants and their successes• Follow longitudinal progress of fellowship recipients in reaching their educational and career goals
