In compliance with SB 1162, Western University of Health Sciences is providing a pay scale for this position. The pay scale reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for this position. Within this range, the individual pay is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training, and work location. Please note that the compensation details listed reflects the base salary only. Full Salary Range Minimum: $64,480.00

Responsible for coordinating and managing husbandry and/or specialty operations for laboratory animal care in the Lebanon, OR COMP-Northwest facility managed by the Office of Animal Resources. Ensure regulatory compliance with all federal, state and local laws pertaining to assigned animal facilities. Provide direct supervision of assigned animal care technicians performing routine and non-routine procedures. Are assigned to weekend/holiday or on-call rosters. Work closely with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee for proper documentation and development of proper SOPs and policies, required to attend monthly IACUC meetings as an ad-hoc member Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- The position requires knowledge and skills on management, budgeting, and scheduling - Computer skills necessary to create documents and work with spreadsheets to facilitate communication and collaborate with the IACUC and investigators- Supervisory responsibilities - Experience with animal care and husbandry for commonly used animals in research - Knowledge of federal and state regulations such as USDA and PHS Knowledge working with the IACUC Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area; or a high school degree or equivalent and four years of relevant experience.
• AALAS LAT certification. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience Preferred Qualifications
Prefer BS degree or higher with at least 4 years' experience with research animal care at a research institution or other appropriate environment.
• Prefer 2 years' research animal husbandry supervisory experience.
• Strongly prefer CMAR certifications at time of hire or within 15 months of eligibility.
• Needs excellent interpersonal, communication and management skills. Must have strong customer service skills especially with research investigators and peers. Posting Date: 11/01/2022

Overall management of assigned facility/area. Ensures facility schedules are implemented and completed, performs husbandry care for the research animals, and manages staff performing husbandry procedures and staff operating equipment following strict guidelines from USDA, and the institution. Responsible for all phases of quality control monitoring and processing of equipment. Ensures housing and environmental compliance with the "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals". Maintains sanitation and work schedules for assigned facilities ensuring industry standards, federal/state laws/regulations, and University policies for research animal care are maintained. Responsible for maintaining room logs, water quality logs, sanitation records, etc. Aids researchers (Scheduling, supplies prep, facility organization, etc.). Assists with regulatory compliance and quality control process. Provides OAR director with input for updating standard operating procedures and practices. Ensures waste is routed to appropriate waste streams. Track the census for each research investigator, prepare monthly invoices and submit to the Director for approval.

Conducts interviews and provides input for hiring applicants for permanent/ temporary employment. Mentoring of staff and ensuring that they are proficient in assigned duties. Ensures animal care technicians are trained and are proficient in working with approved housing systems in animal holding rooms, autoclaves, rack washers, and other equipment within the animal facility and specialized equipment in support rooms. Responsible for assigned technician's performance appraisals. Provide guidance and support in creating a fully well-rounded employee. Will be responsible for ensuring that staff, researchers and their support personnel are up to date on SOP's, policies and training. Will ensure time entered by assigned staff is correct before approving. Ensure that Leave, Overtime and Weekend/Holiday Change Requests are approved in a timely manner. Assist in weekend rotations and fill in for animal care technicians as needed.

Work closely with the IACUC to assist with documentation, recordkeeping and updating SOPs and policies. Required to be an ad-hoc member of the IACUC to provide guidance on animal care and husbandry. Work with the IACUC in the Post-Approval-Monitoring program.

Assist investigators with project development and training of their staff. Order, receive and document supplies for facility and animal orders for investigators. Process special service requests from researchers

Duties are routinely performed in a typical animal vivarium and research laboratory setting. While performing duties in this setting the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold (non-weather), and risk of electric shock.
The employee is regularly exposed to wet humid conditions (non-weather), moving mechanical parts, and high precarious places. The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat (non-weather), and risk of radiation.
