Job Description Summary: The intern position is designed to give undergraduate or graduate students in urban / regional planning, architecture, or a similar field the opportunity to explore municipal, regulatory design, permitting functions, customer support, while providing a professional development opportunity. The development review zoning intern supports the Zoning Administration team on a variety of application types, projects, project research, customer support materials, and administrative tasks.
Job Description: DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides direct support to the Zoning Administration team within Development Review. Learns the City's development application review process; learns to review applications for completeness; gains familiarity with site, topographic, landscape, and architectural plans; learns to read and interpret the Land Use Code; learns to read and explain City ordinances. Researches, collects, compiles, records, and summarizes technical data; assists higher level planning & zoning staff assemble documentation for projects and presentations. Conducts project related research as needed including but not limited to historical research of previous administrative reviews, board-level reviews and building permit approvals. Assists with administration review applications (such as zoning verification letters and administrative variances) for consistency with land use regulations through review of the Land Use Code and previous administrative review approvals. Assists with the development of customer support materials. Assists in the enhancement of the department's record keeping system by organizing and computerizing files and navigating the City's record management software Laserfiche. Conducts basic office functions as needed, such as data entry, form & informational packet updates, file management, and general customer service. Provides assistance in the review and general day to day operations of certain applications and functions (i.e., building permits, zoning verification letters, administrative variances, Board of Zoning Adjustment (BOZA) variances & the Inquire Boulder public interface). Important Skills Include:
Strong customer service skills Strong written and oral communication skills Strong research and analytical skills The ability to learn processes quickly Motivated self-starter, able to work independently Ability to work effectively in a team environment Flexibility and desire to work on varying application types Competency in Microsoft Office as well as electronic plans review software (e.g. Bluebeam) Additional Desired Skills Include:
Basic knowledge of local government functions Basic knowledge of architectural, urban planning and zoning principles Basic ability to read site plans, as well as architectural and construction documents Strong graphics skills Competency with Sketchup, Adobe Creative Suite REQUIREMENTS: Must be enrolled in (or have recently graduated from) an undergraduate or master's degree program in Urban and Regional Planning, Architecture (or a related field). 
WORKING CONDITIONS: Physical Demands: Requires occasional lifting, carrying, walking and standing; frequent hand/eye coordination to operate personal computer and office equipment; vision for reading, recording and interpreting information; speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and the public.
Machines and equipment used include but are not limited to the following: Frequently uses standard office equipment including laptop computers, phones and copy machines / scanners.
Office Environment: This position could involve a combination of both in-office and at-home work.
TIMING / COMPENSATION: This position would begin as early as May 2024 and is a paid internship, paying $18.50/hour with a maximum of 20 hours a week. The duration of the internship may last for up to one year.
