The Geriatrics Center Community Programs consist of four distinct community programs servicing older adults along the entire continuum of geriatric care and serving all older adult patients across Michigan Medicine, as well as the larger community by offering services that address social isolation, barriers to accessing care and inclusion of underserved populations, thereby impacting and supporting the strategic priorities of University of Michigan Health- Michigan Medicine to Build our BASE (Belonging-Access-Safety-Experience as well as the current initiatives to address Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) across the entire health system):
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute engages active seniors in learning in retirement (Belonging: prevention of social isolation, connections) Turner Senior Wellness Programs provides social, physical and health related education and support services (SDoH: access to nutrition programs, address social isolation, connect older adults and caregivers to available clinic care coordination across Michigan Medicine) Silver Club Memory Programs provides evidence based day programs to persons with dementia and their caregivers (Safety and Patient Experience: respite for family/informal caregivers, and education) Turner African American Services Council enhances access to wellness and health education for diverse and underserved older adults (Access, Inclusion and SDoH/reducing health inequities) This is an essential leadership role and position within the Geriatrics Center, Social Work and Community Programs. The role is also a dual function of program development for growing services to older adults in the community, and onsite staff supervision for three separate Geriatrics Center Community programs, as well as being the overall building manager for all facility and equipment needs.
As the Director of the Turner Senior Wellness Programs , this position leads program development and implementation of direct social services and activities to older adults and their families, and resources focused on reducing social isolation and promoting overall wellness, open to the entire Michigan Medicine health system.
A summary of specific functions include:
Personnel management : lead hiring and onboarding process for new staff, provide direct supervision and support to staff and volunteers of the community programs. Advisory Boards and Community Boards : facilitate or co-facilitate various Advisory Boards for Community Programs supporting the Michigan Medicine mission to promote Patient/Family Centered Care, as it extends to the community services, and represent the Geriatrics Center Community Programs on select community boards and groups. Financial Oversight: assist with development of budgets, and monitor expenditures of Community Programs; serve as Turner Senior Wellness Programs staff representative on Geriatrics Center Development Committee(s) and assist with meeting facilitation; ensure compliance with all relevant University and Michigan Medicine standards and processes; review and recommend program fee structures.  Grants/Fundraising Coordination: identify and write grant applications for ongoing and new funding for programs; monitor program compliance and quality per contract requirements and applicable standards; maintain ongoing communication with all sponsored funding organizations; identify and meet with potential donors; provide leadership in annual Big Hearts for Seniors Fundraising Event in collaboration with 6 programs (Housing Bureau, Meals on Wheels and the 4 Geriatric Center Community Programs) serving older adults. Program Direction : develop and implement a full array of health and wellness programs, resources and volunteer opportunities to promote well-being of older adults; evaluate progress and results and recommend improvements; plan, implement and coordinate daily functions of the Turner Senior Resource Center; address customer concerns and resolve complaints; develop policies and procedures to support Community Program activities. Facility and Equipment Oversight/ Office Coordination : serve as primary point of contact and liaison between building landlord and university/health system safety and facility departments; ensure "director on duty" is available during program hours; coordinate after-hours space and serve as building contact; and manage janitorial and facility contracts to ensure cleanliness of facility.  Marketing and Publicity : oversee development of Turner Senior Wellness Program marketing plan and materials, including brochures, newsletters, website content, press releases, etc. The Community Programs engage 250+ active community volunteers, who receive direct supervision and guidance from the Geriatrics Center staff, with direct oversight by this position.
Bachelor's degree in business, healthcare administration, or a related field is preferred. 5+ years prior experience in management, supervisory, or team roles with increasing responsibility demonstrated. Experience cultivating a culture of customer service. Experience creating and implementing strategic visions of shared knowledge within the community. Applied experience implementing change management and continual improvement of operations at an enterprise or large-scale level. Experience making sound, independent judgments; handling complex situations; and balancing competing priorities. Experience leading in a complex organization, building cross-unit partnerships, gaining support and commitment. Passion for supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion in a workplace environment. Formal training and a minimum of 2 years of experience working with older adults Experience with grant writing Experience with fundraising Proficiency in keeping accurate and timely financial records This is full time, 40 hour/week position. The typical schedule is Monday-Friday with start and end times 8:00-4:30 or 8:30-5:00. Occasional after hour/weekend coverage possible.
