Full job description Academic Hourly Department of Microbiology University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Job Summary
The successful candidate for this position will perform research activities relating to the genetic, molecular, and biochemical characterization of bacterial viruses (phages) and anti-phage immune systems in the lab of Dr. Asma Hatoum-Aslan in the Microbiology Department. The candidate will also perform some laboratory management duties. Duties & Responsibilities
Research activities
Constructing suitable genetic systems in Staphylococcus species to characterize bacterial immunity mechanisms
Designing and constructing plasmids using Gibson assembly and other cloning techniques
Discovering, propagating, and genetically manipulating staphylococcal viruses (phages) Overexpressing and purifying Staphylococcus and phage proteins Performing in vitro enzymatic assays in order to functionally characterize Staphylococcus and phage proteins. Familiarizing oneself with the knowledge of the field, as well as with the current developments, including new methodologies that become available. Generating specific protocols to carry out the approaches, setting up experimental systems. Collecting data, performing statistical analysis, summarizing data in tables and graphs. Writing weekly priorities for the project and monthly reports on the progress. Presenting reports on the project at laboratory meetings. Working collaboratively with fellow teammates. Lab management activities
Ordering laboratory supplies Overseeing laboratory safety compliance Preparing standard laboratory reagents Stocking laboratory Training new incoming students General laboratory management tasks (e.g. ensuring equipment gets repaired, etc.)
Required Qualifications
Bachelors degree. Laboratory experience in microbiology, molecular biology, and/or biochemistry. Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills. The capacity to work collaboratively. Familiarity with molecular biology approaches and theory behind them. Analytical and numerical skills: ability to perform mathematical calculations (add, subtract, - multiply, divide) in different units of measurement; ability to use concepts such as fractions, percentages, and ratios. Knowledge of basic molecular biology
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Microbiology, Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, or related discipline
Experience with aseptic technique
Protein purification experience
Experience working with phages
Background in microbiology with strong biochemistry knowledge
Appointment Information This is a Academic Hourly position with a work expectation of approximately 40 hours per week. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. Salary is commensurate with experience.
